Is there much demand for 40 year old Muffs?

What's Hot

I’ve got an eBay search saved for 1978 in guitars as I was set on a birth year guitar. I think I’ve past that stage now...

Anyway the odd thing pops up now and again and surprises me.

£250 for a 70’s Big Muff? Really?

I know there’s value in some old pedals - I’ve got an OD1 that a bought for a tenner and will do nicely out of one day.

What’s the crack? Old components that cannot be bought/replicated? Nostalgia?

Give it a year and I’ll take whatever muff I can get.

Half of the time its expensive because it can be.

The russian muffs are the same.

I imagine they sound their own way due to the older components, but you’re just paying the majority for what you can no longer get I feel.

I've got a rubbish Shaftesbury wah pedal with a siren effect (I used to use it when we played Jailbreak in our school band!), and apparently it's worth loads now.

At my age 40 year old muffs are cradle snatching :-(

1978 was around the time of the first release of the Big Muff graphics as we know them. the 1977-8 muffs were OK ish too.

Before that they were in Ram's Head style, but in 75 and 76, the font was violet

It’s not that far off some boutique pedal prices really.

I have one of those; the Shaftesbury Squall pedal, made by Shin-Ei.
The siren was famously used on Sweet's "Blockbuster".
Also has surf and tornado effect!

That's the IC muff isn't it, a 78? Blame Billy Corgan! They used to fetch nothing and now they're silly money, I've got a clone, sounds great no need for the massive vintage sized one tbh. Sure it's great like.

My head said brake, but my heart cried never.

With a little luck a clone will be more usable as the bypass isn't great on an original '78 IC muff. They do sound great when engaged though.

Many a good tune played on an old Muff.

I sold my very battered 1980 Tubescreamer for £225 a couple of years ago, and there's nothing about that which can't be replicated today.

It's nostalgia, with some star association built in.

Behave. This is serious I’m just trying to take precautions before diving into any old muff.

You should take precautions but then dive in anywhere, it's good practise.
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

I think a lot depends on condition.

I sold my 70's Big Muff in the Classifieds. It was one of the first to arrive in the UK. I rushed down to the shop when they phoned to say that the shipment had arrived. And got the first one out of the carton.
It was therefore amusing for me to get a PM telling me that the oversized knobs were "not the orignal ones".  :)

It was gigged but was handled with great care and was as new when sold. It was soon sold for the asking price (just over £300 from memory) to a guy in Europe who has a website selling a very wide range of (new) pedals. He was absolutely thrilled to get the earliest Muff straight out of a time machine.
