What will be the next cultural phenomenon?

What's Hot

50s rock n roll and beatniks 60s psychedelia 70s Punk, 80s acid house, 90s grunge and britpop, 00s - erm.. Tony Wilson once said that cultural shifts happen every ten years, surely we are due a shake up? Or maybe I’m just not young enough to be feeling it and it’s happening right in front of me. Opinions please.

Hopefully something politically based for once. We’ve been too apathetic about it for too long, and now look at the state of things. Civil unrest barely registers in music & culture anymore, unless it’s passed me by I guess, but that similarly implies that it’s just not important enough to transcend genre’s & subcultures.

^ The whole Gangsta / Grime / Drill Rap is a fairly acute microcosm of Social Unrest and culture ........it's just passing you by because you are probably too old to listen to the stations/ playlists that pump it out .
I don't think my late Grandfather was especially aware of Marc Bolan or Jimmy Page because he could only fit 78s on his wind up gramophone.

Rant ... a mixture of punk, thrash metal, techno and drill .. it will originate in Wales with an artist called Emperor Fabulous and it will conqueror the world ... first single called Overreaction  from the album Vinyl Flooring Catalogue ..

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

I think the plethora of subcultures that is so much more varied than ever is something in itself, rather than one dominant thing like in the past. Presumably due to the many more media through which culture is disseminated these days.
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

This.  Music is just a bit of background noise to accompany all the other things people do with their precious phones.

I don't think popular music will ever again have the same cultural significance it had for the last 40 years of the 20th century.

Our propensity for retro means it’s about time there was a youth movement that decried all things digital and decide to live in communes and commit to the “analogue” lifestyle
