Is there anyone more univerally loved and admired in music? I don't think there's many

So sad. Iconic lady, always carried herself with huge dignity. Even when frying chicken for Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi.....

So sad, but she's not been well for years. What a voice ... a true legend.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Yes, there have been reports of illness circulating for quite some time.
She was, is and always will be the Queen Of Soul to me.
She literally made me glad to be alive.

My favourite voice bar none.  Very sad news.

Interestingly, re. the Blues Brothers reference - when Dan Ackroyd and John Landis were wondering about having all these soul and blues greats appear in the film, they all jumped at the chance.  Rock was dominating the charts and they had little work.

Can you imagine that now?  You'd have no chance of booking them.

Incidentally, anyone who's not checked her out on "Live at the Fillmore West" is missing a trick.  Spirit in the Dark, a vocal duet with Ray Charles and Aretha playing the Fender piano... magic stuff.

Sad news and was reminded again of how great she was on the brilliant Carole King story (shown again last week on BBC Four) and always smile at her mention in Steely Dan's 'Hey Nineteen'

One of the last true icons. Rest in peace Aretha.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

I used to play out this tune all the time when I used to DJ, and it never failed to get people dancing.

AF is a legend, will be missed for sure.

Very sad.  Huge 60s soul fan as a teen and she was by far my favourite female soul singer at the time.  Oddly I never learned the guitar parts to many of her tunes, but did learn some bass parts including Chuck Rainey's fabulous bassline on her version of Stevie Wonder's "Until You Come Back to Me", possibly my favourite Aretha track, absolutely glorious.

  • Sad news indeed. The word ''legend" gets bandied about all to often these days, but if anyone fits the bill it's Aretha. Pure class.

Also acted in one of the greatest films of all time...
