    Tristan chord (Wagner opera):

    E - X
    A - 8
    D - 9
    G - 8
    B - 9
    E - X
    Isn't that F-7-5 (the half-diminished chord I referred to earlier) ?
It is actually the same notes but the Tristan chord is in the key of A minor so it isn't the degrees that you posted.

Sounds the same when played with no context though obviously :)
    Hmmm ... with respect to A thats b6 9 b5 7 or put another way maj9(#11,b13) ?  a very strange altered chord!
It's from the Wagner Opera Tristan und Isolde, it's very well known as a really unusual chord.

It's getting beyond my understanding of music theory at that level. Hopefully I will learn up to that level in the future.

The Wikipedia article is an interesting read. It seems there's some debate among music theory academics about exactly what is going on with it.
According to the interwebs Radiohead use it on the track Idioteque
    They would lol

  • @terada I am barre-ing the ADG strings on the first fret with my index finger. The trick is to then avoid the open B. For some reason I find it easier going in from the E add9 rather than playing it in isolation; creeping up on it if you will. But maybe your index finger joint length is a factor too! :)

    FMaj9?

Came across this rather dissonant chord earlier today...

    Dsus#4

    E X
    A X
    D 0
    G 2
    B 3
    E 4

Sounds horrible on its own, but as a passing chord in a 12 bar turnaround...

     | D : D : Dsus4 : Dsus#4 | A7 |

    ...it works.

Major 3rd is implied. The E natural implies it. But if you were to add an Ab (minor 3rd) then it would be a Fminmaj9.

Thanks dudes, the quest for chord knowledge continues! Nice to get away from the GAS and ponder the multi-dimensional musical landscape for a bit.

Still doing battle with *the* Purple Rain chord.  Believe it's an E flat add 9 - there's far easier fudges but this is the way Wendy Melvoin played it in the Purple Rain film and on the record, and it's the way I want to play it 'right'.

    E - X
    A - 6
    D - 8
    G - 10
    B - 8
    E - 6

I did a short instructional video about this chord. There are a couple of versions - see if you can spot the transition between the chords.

I play Stevie Wonder’s Lately in C, and the climb up towards the climax has that amazing chord before resolving to the Ab major, which is:

    76766x resolving to 688766.

    The whole sequence is:

    Dm - Cause this time
    Em7 - could
    Fm7 - mean
    Gm7 - good
    A - bye
    Bbm7 - good
    Cm7 - byeee
    76766x - eeeee, cause
Bb - I’m a man of many wishes etc.
