Cab mic clamp / stand

What do people recommend for holding a mic (specifically an e609 shape) in front of a speaker cab?

I like the idea of something which clamps to the cab and takes up no floor space, like this:
https://www.thomann.de/gb/audix_cab_grabber.htm
But it's a bit pricey - can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative?

Otherwise I could go for a compact floor stand, something like this:

Suggestions gratefully received :)

The classic method with the e609 is to wrap the cable through the top handle so the mic hangs down flat against the grille cloth.

The hanging method may work, but only with certain speaker configs and even then, it's difficult to get it precisely aligned.

Personally I've always gone with the small mic stand option, but with an adjustable boom arm so that positioning can be more precise.

I've not tried the Cab Grabber, so I can't say how well they work, but they're are cheaper similar alternatives right there on the Thomann Cab Grabber ad at £21? - https://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_amp_clamp.htm

    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

  • I always used to use a Wishbone amp hook, which always worked great for me. It can be held in place by your combos top handle, or can sit between a head and cab.

There was a product called the ZEE bar or similar. Just a z shaped strip with a mic clip holder. Takes little room in the pack and easy setup.

I tried that but I got a bit of mic movement, I think possibly depends if the front grill is recessed a bit into the cab frame which means that it doesn,t actually rest on the grille cloth.

I have some clip on mic stands that came with ym superlux e609 rip offs and I used those for a bit but in the end I found getting the gooseneck right where you wanted it was a bit of a PITA so ended up jsut using a mini-mic stand of the sort you would use for a bass drum.

At some point would def like to get one of the bracket style ones though.

I've used the Amp clamp wtpro on several cabs in the past and found it brilliant.
Cheaper than those spring loaded clamps and much more precise.
Once youve installed the little bracket, you get precise close Mic placement time after time.

    That looks decent actually.

FWIW the 609 & 906 are supercardoid which also means a bass boost when placed close to source. For that reason you might even prefer it off the grille cloth rather than hung/placed against it.

Is there a hinge between the mounting plate and the boom? If not, it looks like a flat mic (e609 / 906) would be a *long* way off the grille.

It's looks alright. I think most guitarists just listen with their eyes.

I use a mini mic-stand with boom arm, I picked it over a cab-grabber because it's a piece of gear that has more than one application.  i've never used it for anything other than micing a cab, but I've got the option to if needs be.

I used to hang my 906 but it tended to move and made a noise, so now I use your 2nd suggestion which is perfectly fine.

Depending on the size of the cab, there's a Proel amp stand with a mic boom attached. Certainly OK for a 2x10 combo (cos that's what I had on mine)

Unfortunately there's no UK dealer for amp clamp so you buy direct from the states.
I didnt have any problems buying mine, in fact it came in less than a week too.

Tape the "neck" of the mic to the grille (i use gorilla tape), and tape the cable where it comes over the front-top edge of the cabinet.

  • I bought a cab grabber-alike, but was very disappointed with it - the gooseneck is nowhere near stiff enough, so the mic (an e906 clone) just droops down out of position :(

So I went back to a compact floor stand, and got a much more stable position.

I once saw a video online of a rather robust lady performing particularly lewd activities with a very similar set of apparatus.
