Fingerstyle books - recommendations

Hi all,

Been playing electric guitar for a long, lomg time but got a hankering for learning some acoustic fingerstyle stuff. Played classical for a while as a kid but looking for some book/DVD recommendations to get going. Ideally something to get the basics right and then stuff to move on from there..

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Woody Mann's Complete Blues Guitar is a great book - not complete beginner level but very basic and covers a wide range of blues styles

That, without a doubt.  Possibly the best all encompassing acoustic book I think I've read.

Even if you're not into blues, it covers all the fundamentals of alternating thumb fingerstyle clearly and in a way that's tranferable to any style.

Got one of these arriving soon, though I expect it'll be autumn before I start to tussle with it. I'll find out if it's fingerstyle and report back.

I remember a thread like this a few years ago which had loads of recommendations in. Having just checked my Amazon account, I bought 3 books in 2011 based on recommendations in the thread, including the one @Lewy recommended.

Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method: Book with 2 CDs.

They were bought with Amazon vouchers when I left a job, around the time my son was born, which distracted me for a few years but these days I play more acoustic than electric

Thanks very much for this. Just working through Eric's book now and some really interesting stuff as I've come largely from the electric world. I played classical guitar in my former years so trying to get the old digits moving again..

I' going to grab the some of the other books to give me some more material to work with. Not a criticism at all but the Roche book is covers lots of ground..

Not a book but Don Ross has some great lessons on fingerstyle on Jamplay.

I found the finger independence and polyrhythmic picking lessons very helpful.

Check out Jim Bruce and his online videos. Some free on YouTube. Great format with combination video and onscreen tab, all nicely broken down into a few bars at a time.

Also, Jerrys guitar bar is excellent for individual songs.

Recently received a copy of Pierre Bensusan's 'the guitar book'. Focuses on DADGAD (intermediate to advanced) but it is fantastic. Only guitar book I own which includes tablature and recipes/poems etc.....

Stefan Grossman was the go-to guy in my day, you used to be able to buy cassettes (!) with lessons on them.  He did them on tab, so you could see what to play and also (possibly for the first time) hear how it was supposed to sound - radical for the time!
