Help me choose an amp

I am needing to change my amp (currently a Laney Cub 10).

I like the Laney as it's a lovely clean amp. I keep it clean and use pedals for any overdrive.

I'm not sure what to replace it with. My budget will be £500 and open to new or used. I want a combo rather than head and cab. Ideally one 12" speaker as I want to keep the amp a sensible size.

Any suggestions? I don't want a Blues Jr but key is good cleans.

I'll be first to say to try a Boss Katana...

Unless you really really need valves for your playing style they are probably one of the best amps under £500.
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

Hot Rod Deluxe, Laney VC30, various used Mesas.

Kustom 36 Coupe, great cleans and pedal platform. The tuck and roll top looks groovy :)

Look for a Fender blackface 1x12 on ebay. There's a couple of Supers on there now well within budget. Otherwise, a Mesa 1x12 might also be a good shout, there's some Nomads and DC3s on ebay for around the 500 mark.

     Katana then ;-)
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • Just an idea but what about upgrading the speaker and valves in the cub 10, I did this and it made a surprising difference in volume and clarity, enough to keep up with a noisy drummer

My Cub 10 is playing up. Had it to a technocite before but it's given up I think. Time for something new

Perhaps not powerful enough for your needs but how about a Vox AC4 12, or you could stay with Laney and go with the Laney L5T 112 which gets stellar reviews. Other than those, that Fender 75 is a lot of amp for the money and the 15" makes a great guitar speaker.

They really aren't. For 500 you can get a shit load of amp in the used market.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Cub 12. Like a cub 10, but louder. But a celestion V in and it sings.

It's a great amp but just not the one for me. The search continues. Thinking something like a hot rod deluxe maybe. I have no idea about Mesa Boogie Amps to know what to look for
