Which amp..

What's Hot

Didn't think I'd ever be contemplating this but I just feel my band and the music genre it is now playing my Lazy J20 is not suiting it. I absolutely love this amp as some of you may already know but it's a real rocker and feeling I'd like to go for a more cleaner amp. Oh god can't believe I'm gonna say this but....... I'm thinking of selling it but I need to look for a suitable replacement first before I finally decide.

So what would you guys suggest or recommend. I'd want a combo still, not weigh a ton, has good headroom and a master volume. Hand wired is what I've been used to so may want to continue with that, maybe. I suppose once I've sold the J20 I'd be looking for a replacement around the £2000 mark but preferable less

Any pointers?

    Whats the genre?

Do you want clean and tweedish - lots of mids, or clean and scooped - black face Fendery.

This is where I get lost a bit tbh. Genre wise we Soul/R&B/Funky but with a rocky/bluesy edge. So a bit cleaner than what the J20 can do :)

Bad Cat Hot Cat would nail that tbh

  • Two Rock Studio Pro 35. The best clean amp I’ve ever heard with headroom for days. It can be pushed with the gain control to get some nice gritty cleans if you want it. There is one in Coda Music at the moment.

Takes pedals well? Does that have reverb? Sorry should have said that'd like a reverb on it

Both of those suggestions sound great to me i.e. Two Rock and the Bad Cat. Two Rock looks more portable if I was being picky

The two rock above is probably the right sort of sound then, but for a high priced amp it is butt ugly.

Have you ever tried a super reverb? maybe a 1 x 12 version of that would be ace.
Or a JTM45 1 x 12 would be nice too, just a bit more power.

You really need to try a few different things out to see what will float your boat

Yeah it is ugly I agreed. JTM45 I am wary of due to one going down on me during a gig :(

The Bad Cat Hot Cat I have is heavier than the Sun but most good amps are :)

Deluxe reverb would be an obvious choice - and used to record lots of the music in the styles you list.

I'd have thought for £2k you could get a real vintage one, or for much much less a reissue.

How funny, I was going to post an almost identical post as the OP. Following on in interest..
FWIW I tried the Two Rocks Pro 35 and liked it, although it can be a bit more fiddly to dial in your sound as opposed to something like the OP's Lazy J.

I would not recommend a real "M"built one..... more like how lazyJ is really a Fender etc etc so one with really good quality parts and build quality.

Yep it is that's why you know I have one but as I use two amps together I'd want a different flavour from it  Id go for one of yours Chris but you don't have a master volume on your builds :(

    JTM45 or Super Reverb.

Stick to the classics. They are classics for a reason
