People describing their stuff 'as new' when it 's not

What's Hot
I weakened this evening when I saw an advert for a Marshall pedal advertised 'as new'.

It was chipped and filthy so I decided to call the guy out on it as I have had my time wasted in the past by people mis-describing the condition of their stuff just to get a bite. I took a look at all his other pedals and they were grimy and definitely far from the 'as new' condition as he had described them.

Anyway, unsurprisingly I had a messaging spat with him and he ended up threatening really hacked off.

Perhaps I should have said nothing but, people that don't describe their used stuff properly really piss me off as they're wasting everyone's time.

Was I wrong? Should I have just walked on by?

The adverts are on FB NI if you want to take a peek. The prices are actually reasonable.

  • Sounds about right - the word “Mint” on fleabay is a joke nowadays.

I was on reverb yesterday and was about to pull the trigger on a “Like New” pedal.  So glad I enlarged the pictures - it was not beat up but clearly had some wear and tear with chips and text rubbed off

I particularly like the ‘like new’ guitars that have had a belt sander relic job -how the hell is that ever ‘like new’?

I bought something off fleaBay last week, which was described as BNWT. The buyer's description mentioned un-used, but didn't say it was new. In the listing it said New (other) and you could tell from the images that the thing was a few years old by the colour scheme and was a bit scrunched up.  But is had tags on it.

I bought it because I was happy with the price. IMHO, the seller knew they were selling old stock and was careful not to use the word "new". If it turned up full of cat hair or stinking of fags, I would have sent it back.

Sometimes it's a game and if both parties are happy, it's OK. But there's a fine line - caveat emptor (buyer beware)!

  • The one that makes me laugh is 'MINT, as new' closely followed by 'a few dinks and chips but nothing serious'.

It's the democratisation brought about by the internet.  Everyone's a bloody salesman now.

I suspect the proportion of bullshitters-to-honest types is about the same as it ever was but the availability of stuff is so much more widespread now making the liars seem manifold.

do you think the term 'Mint' comes from:

    A> Just Minted

    or

    B> Mint Fresh

Or "as new, with upgrades", the upgrades being 6 in number - new strings.

Half the stuff in music shops isn't "new" either  :)
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

  • My current conundrum is understanding how the seller can claim that a guitar "plays incredibly" but is also "unplayed" ...

I get pissed off when people don't even clean stuff. It takes seconds to do. Describing something as like new is asking for trouble.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.
