Out of interest, is there an easy/safe way to clean a tweed amp covering?

I used carpet cleaner to good effect on a Tweed Deluxe once.

Depends on if the tweed has been treated with shellac/lacquer or not.

if not then you will probably struggle to get any stains out of the cloth and possibly leave marks behind, I think most new Fenders do not have shellac/lacquer applied.

if yes you might win with some warm water first, maybe try some soap after that and then a scrubbing brush.... i.e. ease into it.

Or burn it with some cigarettes and tow it behind the car around the block and you will have a road worn version.

Turn the volume down below 6 and it’ll be a lot cleaner.

Or below 2 for a Deluxe to get clean!

Is it grubby beyond a desirable state of natural relicing? Given that people do try and age tweed amps to make them look old and knackered/loved.

I got a big discount on my 59 Bassman cos it had a black 'boot scuff' on the side panel. The dealer had not been able to get it out. I used Dettol Mold Remover  and it sorted it well good.

  • Thanks all. I had been asking as I was looking at a few tweed amps, some with quite a few marks on them. I've ended up going for a different amp so won't need the cleaner. Thanks for the tips though

Tweed is too full of moral fibre to be cleaned.

I used to use vodka. If you have some mould or blackening on the tweed, the vodka will kill the spores off. Then use a damp cloth with some water to wipe off the vodka. Then leave the amp in the sun to dry off.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

...but doesn’t give your amp the bouquet of having done three world tours with The Pogues...
