Wah wah pedal recommendations?

I'm looking to buy a Wah-wah pedal but know nothing about them. What would you suggest? Bear in mind that it is only a toy for me (more for my grandson!) and will never be gigged - just playing around to get some Hendrixy sounds.

Well if you're after Hendrixy sounds, I believe he used a Vox wah. Added bonus of that one being that they're pretty ubiquitous on the 2nd hand market, and great value for money. If it's just for a 'toy' the V847 would be my suggestion.

Well.. Vox and crybaby are more or less the same pedal. Just get whatever the cheapest one is with true byass if it's just for mucking around with.

I had a Vox and now use a crybaby. To my ears the cry baby sounds better/smoother but everyone has different tastes. I love wah pedals, they are fun, especially for Hendrixy sounds!

This is a really good wah if you want the Hendrix thing. Well-built, well-voiced with decent travel and at a decent price (no affiliation).

Here I go plugging another wah when I'm selling my own wah, but in the name of openess, fairness our community spirit, the Fulltone is very good.

My Boss one is decent, solid and has both a vintage (more Cry Baby) and a modern or rich mode, which is fuller, if that's of any interest and is a much subtler wah? Check out the demos

If you're not familiar with them and it's just for fun then don't over think this, just get a 35 quid Cry Baby or Vox off eBay. Using a wah musically is more about technique IMO than inductors etc.  Plenty of time later to worry about all the gubbins if you get into it.

Plenty of good players use whatever they have, it's all in the foot

I prefered the Vox I had to the Crybaby. But the BYOC rules all.

That said, don't overthink it - any of the true bypass Vox or Crybaby ones are fine. I wouldn't worry about special editions and extra knobs etc unless you already know you need those features. Most people don't

If it’s just for mucking around, then a used new vox/crybaby should do fine. Next step up you’re entering cork sniffing territory, where every element is important, especially the pot sweep and travel. I confess, I sniff cork regularly when it comes to wahs. I hate to admit it: even my favourite new wah (Sonus grey fox) is ultimately bettered by my vintage vox and crybaby, each with its own character.

I've some of the best wahs in the past but I can't get them to work well for me. I've given up. It's certainly a knack

@Steve922 everyone buys a wah then flips it.,. it is the done thing to do. Must admit i still have my Vox pedal, sounds shit clean (very bright) but ok with Fuzz, overdrive etc

BBE Ben Wah. 

Not very expensive, but great sounding to the point where a conman rebadged it, sold it for $300+ and had a lot of people raving about how good it was.

Standard Cry Baby or Vox. Don’t worry about Fasel inductors or true bypass or any of that - Hendrix didn’t. It doesn’t matter at all just for messing about at home. The Vox is probably more ‘Hendrixy’, but it’s just down to which you like better really...

My personal favourite is the Dunlop 535, but it’s discontinued, rare and getting quite expensive.
