  • Whenever I read about wank pop idol voice factor, I always think "just read Chart Throb by Ben Elton". It covers the whole despicable genre very thoroughly and not at all favourably.

There really isn't anything else needs adding.

Reality Talent Shows are to music what roast beef crisps are to a Michelin starred restaurant.

Recommending banning things on TV somewhat ignores that most teenage boys have watched throatfucking videos on porn sites by the time they are 12.

    Horse, bolted. Stable door...
I take your point but you also miss mine a fair bit - Paris fashion weeK banned underweight models - they were right to do it. It doesn't un-invent thinspiration sites but it is right and proper and is part of the solution.

    Same idea.

It also doesn't stop the reason most people end up anorexic, bulimic, COE, etc. It's one of those visible changes that makes for good press copy but isn't anywhere near focusing on the main problems.

But it is the thing that THEY can do.

  • Great for them. It's still a tiny drop in the ocean. But thinspiration is another thread and debate point because if I start it, I won't finish until 2am :dizzy:

It’s on its last legs....don’t panic.
Possibly true, but those last legs have kept plodding away for five or six years now. unfortunately.

ITV will drop it eventually, but one of the Sky channels - or even Channel 5 - will pick it up and keep it on life support, like Big Brother.  And Cowell will keep laughing all the way to the bank.

Personally, I confess I've watched it from the very beginning.  Yes, it was always pap but it was a music talent show and in the very early years they even had some "rock" singers.  Each year it's become slicker, more formularised, more contrived, more selectively edited... and when it started failing, rather than going back to basics they made it even MORE stage-managed.

Several times over the years I've said no, not this year.  And I've avoided the auditions but slipped into watching the live shows, or vice versa.  Finally, this year, I think I may have cracked.  It's been unbearably awful.

That is not a justification. What's the end game, and how far do you want to go? Going with your logic they may as well put porn on CBBC.
    Slippery slope logical fallacy.
Not at all. I know about anthropology and social science. I also believe nothing happens by accident. Without getting into agendas, where we are today can be traced back to the 60's, with things like the introduction of birth control, etc.. Now I'm not a prude, I've done the Rod Stewart kind of thing, but it was all very discreet and we weren't shoving our behaviour down the throats of everyone else. I also wasn't getting my brain filled with porn at age 12, so I'm not sure how you can normalize this and use it as an excuse for the further sexualisation of children.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

    I’m not normalising anything.
I’m saying that it is a waste of time pretending that making arbitrary things off limits in anyway addresses the wider issue that children are exposed to things way earlier than I was, or you were.

... and you cannot dispute that you used a slippery slope logical fallacy, because what you said is the very definition of it. Someone who ‘knows all about anthropology and social science’ should probably know that.
Implying I want to sexualise children because I don’t agree with a particular method of enforcement terminally weakens your argument.

That doesn't make it right though. We didn't suddenly get to this point, it has been increasing in small incremental steps over time, and the media have also had a part to play. I'm lucky that when I was 12 I was larking about with my mates, playing football and listening to music. The opposite sex were like alien creatures from another planet.

Things have moved on, you have to acknowledge where we are at in order to get to a possible solution, rather than pine for a past which is impossible to revisit and was probably different than how it was remembered.

BTW, have you ever been on the BBC3 website? I didn't even know it existed, and they have some right weird stuff on there targeted at the younger generation.

    Frequently.

BBC3 was a FTA channel that went online only a couple of years ago.
There is a lot of shit and a few decent shows (The Might Boosh, for example).

I remember seeing a piece about a girl whose boyfriend wanted to give her one up the boosh, and it then went into detail about how to do it and what she should expect, etc.. Good thing I'd already had my dinner.

If you go too far up someone's boosh, then you can find out what they had for dinner so I hope the lass was careful.

X Factor - its lightweight Saturday night TV: a bafta nominee it is not.

take it, or not, for what it is. For lots of families, its the only thing they all sit down to watch together, so I can't see a harm in that.

I really don't think that the producers think its about music at all.

If you think the X factor is bad, you ought to see some of the rubbish my daughters (10 and 6) like watching on YouTube.  The YouTube is kids stuff that doesn't have the sexualized content, but the overall quality of a lot of it makes the X factor look absolutely brilliant.
