Is it easy to install a SSD?

What's Hot
As per the title, just how hard is it? How does one put the OS onto the new drive? W7 machine, i5, about 6 years old with the OS installed as OEM so no disks.

Looking at SanDisk 250Gb drives on Amazon as I have a free Amazon voucher from work and can't find anything else to waste it on.

Yep. I just bought a a Crucial drive which came with free software (Acronis).

Back up your drive using the software to a third location (I used a different drive)
Create a bootable USB (from Acronis)
Install your SSD in place of your current drive
    Boot from your USB
    Restore your image.

    Is your current drive smaller?
It can take a while to do the backup, and then to do the restore.

It isn't daunting, honestly. The hardest part is probably the little screws which can be stupidly tight.

But, yeah, getting your brother to do it is probably easier.

Check the price difference between 250 and 500gb drives too. It might not be that big.

I paid about £77 from Amazon for my 500GB one.

Nah, it really is a piece of piss. Some come with a tool and caddy so you can migrate in one step. Otherwise system image of existing system to a USB drive, make recovery media, swap drives, boot from recovery media, restore image

Yeah, I used xxclone in the past to do it in one step, but that isn't an option as the author died unfortunately.

  • It's really easy,. Samsung drives come with software that'll clone your old drive to the new one if you like, even works on Windows system disks.

As long as you have a caddy and a decent screwdriver, it's not that difficult.

The performance boost is worth any effort.

Do it. I'd do a fresh install if it was me but that's one of my hangups/bugbears. The extra whizz will RIP your face off!
