Mojo Gold Foil under a nickel cover in the neck, 498T with A3 magnet and variable coil split, home made Varitone on five-way rotary switch, master volume and tone.

There isn't anything this guitar can't do.

PRS Custom 24. I've got a LP, Strat, Tele and a Caparison because I like different styles of music and like playing them. I sold my PRS earlier this year and am buying another this week because I miss it. It's a beautiful workhorse and sounds great. It doesn't quite nail all the guitar tones provided by my other guitars but it gets close enough for gigging and has its own thing going on. It also is one of the best playing guitars Ive ever experienced.

Now if you said two guitars to rule them all, it'd be a Les Paul and a Strat ;-)

I have a few guitars so definitely not trying to preach here but in my dream world I’d have one sound people enjoyed and I was respected for that came from my career long guitar. Not many guitars so I could imitate other players.

Pretty sure if I had the talent to be such a person, it would be a Strat of some sort.

Used an HSH superstrat with a coil tap for many years as a do it all.

I would join any corner dwellers too as I would like a Variax.. I think they're pretty cool :)

When my Jackson is finished- HSH with coil splits and phase shift on the neck, with a Floyd Rose.

Isn’t this ultimately down to where you comfort zone is ?

For me, given that 99% of any stage/recording playing I’ve ever done has been on a Strat type with either HSH or SSH pickups that’s inevitably where I’m going to gravitate towards

I used a twin humbucker LP for everything when I was in a cover band. We were doing indie and rock so I didn't really need any other sounds. The middle position actually did quite a nice "hollow" sound that I would have used when I was trying to imitate a cleaner strat type sound.

Currently my only usable guitar is my SG which therefore has to be used for everything I play. The P90 neck pickup does a good enough "strat" sound and humbucker bridge does everything else. I don't exactly need versatility but I could go back to a covers band on this guitar quite easily. I'm not really about trying to imitate every different songs tone though, I just pick from the few options I have which get close enough.

Never felt the need for more than one guitar, a strat.

  • Something with HSH configuration where you can split the humbuckers. That would cover pretty much all basses.

Yeah, currently got a LP and strat and as a pair it does just about everything, I just wonder if there is a happy medium out there I haven't tried, had a few HSS guitars and they were nice, maybe something slightly off kilter like a Novo or a Krautster would fit the bill, hard to try these guitars unless I do a tour of Britain though lol!

Nah, if you want to cover all basses you'll need a PJ setup, even so Rickenbackers will give you problems. ;)

Interesting range of views, as ever.

For sheer versatility I find my JM unbeatable. Creamery Wide Range at the bridge, Novak Gold Foil neck (was actually supposed to be a bridge pup but rock n roll, yeah?) for widely different base sounds, add in the rhythm circuit to darken everything up. Yum.

I've tried loads of stuff over 10 years of gigging in search of that one guitar and amp that will do it all.  I've been settled on this pair for the last 2 years and I have no desire to change it - my PRS PS 408 and Marshall Mini Jubilee does everything I need, so much so that I don't even bother with pedals any more:

Tele with broadcaster/twisted tele and a 4 way switch. Strat at the neck, tele at the bridge and humbucker in the extra position

This - HSS don't jazz as well as HSH.

I dabble in clean and play mainly heavy alt rock so any guitar with a HS set up is good for me. My fave guitar though only has a bridge humbucker and I’d love to try a single P90 as I think that would be my winning combo. The Humbuckers great but still a little too much sizzle for the clean stuff, backing off the volume loses some treble.

Another vote for the PRS DGT. I mostly play my Strat, and usually take my 335 or Les Paul as well, but my DGT could possibly replace the lot if I wanted it to (which I don't). I've owned three PRS Customs in years gone by but never really got on with any of them. The DGT is something else though, I like it a lot.
