Songs you wish you'd written...

What's Hot
Been trying and failing to write recently, but it got he thinking about what I'd be proud to have written, and thought it might make an interesting topic here.

So ignoring financial motivations, ie don't pick a Christmas song for the royalties etc. What song or songs do you wish you'd written? It what are closest to what you'd like to achieve? And why?

Not necessarily your favourite songs, but songs you would aspire to write

Just a bit of fun.

I'll start with three:
White Stripes - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

Love the simplicity of it, feels so primal, the lyrics are sweet but sound quite profound when delivered with the power of it all, and great guitar tones (that fuzz!!!)

Jeff Buckley - Mojo Pin

Feels quite trance like on the verses, feels intense

Bright Eyes - Landlocked Blues

Ultimate lyricist for me

    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

  • Too many really, but as I've been listening to Level 42 a bit lately, then, this one. Got to be one of the best Ballads ever.

I like other songs more, but I have always admired this song for it's composition, arrangement, and the choice of instruments. It's also written in A-A-B-A form, and has survived multiple plays over the years. I think it may be the perfect guitar based pop song.

If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

  • Don’t laugh, but pretty much anything off Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love album.

Heroes by Bowie, or the Blackstar album.

In the meantime by Spacehog. Specifically the bassline.

plus a million other awesome tunes I can’t remember now!

Lots of Tom Waits tracks, Smokey Robinson tracks, etc. but, the one that always grabs me is:

    Nick Cave's Into My Arms.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnHoqHscTKE

Lyrically, and melodically, it's near perfect.

Another one that is near perfect, is Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, My Deceiving Heart:

Everything about it is so great.

based on the royalties of around 1/2 million a year than not a bad option

Believe something played all the year like Baker Street is about 70K a year
