Ouch :(. That can also happen on Rickenbackers with the pre-1985 truss rods if someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing overtightens them - but with a maple neck, more usually it forces the fingerboard off instead of breaking through the back.

I suspect this one has had a bit of abuse in the past to be honest. Something has given way as it was on the stand when it happened and hadn’t been touched!

That’s why you should stick with passive ones....

    Is that the Shuker?!?

Gosh. There must have been a lot of tension on the truss rod for that to happen. Looks like it's gone all Alien on you, bursting out the neck like that.  On the bright side, it looks quite fixable.

    Yep - that’s the Shuker

  • I'm not getting this.  Is there a problem with a garbage truss rod, or a fundamental issue with the structure of the guitar?

It’s a feature of a dual action truss rod - when they go, they go!

    Jeez...I'm sorry to see that.

I hope it gets sorted for you - wouldn't expect this on a new bass.

I used to play a fretless marleaux and then I had a brave wood precision, so similar tastes.

To be fair it’s 10 years old! But yes - it’s unfortunate but not the makers fault at all

The old Rickenbacker rods do the same thing even though they're not dual action - if tightened incorrectly, or very rarely even if not, they can buckle internally and expand outwards with great force. When I got my 4001 the adjustment nuts were bent downwards at a sharp angle, which is a warning sign - it must have a better-glued fingerboard than some, because it hadn't split off.

I have to say I prefer the conventional type which RIC changed to in 1984 - although they're a slightly less stable design than the old ones when those are working and adjusted right, they have less tendency to do damage when they're not.

    Oh man that is unfortunate!

I have honestly never seen this on any instrument. Do you know what caused it?
No, not yet. I’m sure Jon will let me know when he gets it.

My suspicion is the weld on the dual action truss rod failed
So the tension in the truss rod then made it go ping, and did all that damage?
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

Ouch!  Not what you want to see on any instrument, let alone that one.
