Patch cable lengths

I want to add another pedal to my board. However the only space available is to the right of the board i.e. the input end, but it needs to be last in the chain. This will mean I'd have to make a patch cable long enough to stretch across to the output side of the board. My only query is this, possibly unnecessarily, long cable going to contribute to any tone loss etc. Personally I believe that the lengths of various patch cables linking the pedals (not many by the way) in my case isn't going to matter that much to the naked ear but I've read that cable length can add to the sound in a bad way. Surely I have nothing to worry about?

Have you considered moving everything up a little?

It will be an absolute pain to do that believe me. All my EASIS cables are cut to length and will have to re do them. If I can avoid doing it I will. Especially knowing the fact that I may change it all back - knowing me :(

  • It won't make much difference.

Are any of your pedals buffered? If so it will make no difference. Even if they're all true bypass it probably won't be audible.

After the mechanical contacts, soldered joints, mechanical bypass switches, length of guitar lead to plugboard, length of lead from plugboard to amp, etc. the length of a patch lead itself is not going to make a blind bit of difference.

I had a similar predicament - two rows of pedals on the board and very short patch cables. I snaked a 1m angled cable underneath the board to connect the two rows. No loss of signal.

If there was any degradation you would never notice it
