Favourite long songs

What's Hot

I've noticed this sounds really good setting the speed to 1.25 as well, don't want to get all John Peel. But I like finding long songs and speeding them up a notch.

Beautiful song at any speed tbh.

If you can read this then my time machine works.

    Define 'long'...

Are we talking anything longer than standard pop-song 3-5min range, or are we talking full on prog-rock 15-20min marathons?!

First thing that springs to my mind is probs Bruce and the E Street Band Jungleland . Epic ending to an epic album.

Marquee Moon by Television - 11 minutes and brilliant from start to finish. The whole album is a corker!

For storytelling, I love Dylan's Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. Tom Russell does a great cover of it too.

  • My current favourite is this one:

I was never much of a fan of Nightwish, mainly because I didn't like Tarja's vocals (although she's a superb singer) and I liked Anette Olzon's even less. Having just discovered Floor Jansen, though, I'm feeling a bit embarrassed about the whole thing...she's pretty incredible. Even if you don't watch the rest of it, from 8:00 to the end is just brilliant.

    "Floorgasm" indeed :D

@matdotcodot ;I love "I Dream A Highway". I talked to David about it once and he said they recorded it late at night in a very sombre mood having just returned from John Hartford's funeral. The song went on and on and he was crapping himself that the tape would run out. A few seconds after the last note died away came the sound of "flap flap flap"... they made it. Just...

    A few I rather like...

Burn Girl Prom Queen - Mogwai
    $29 - Tom Waits
    Melody - Serge Gainsbourg
    Freedom Flight - Shuggie Otis
Track Goes By - The High Llamas
    Some Misunderstanding - Gene Clark

Ride - Leave Them All Behind

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Pink Floyd's Shine on you crazy diamond. I know it's done in a few different parts and all that, but it's still the same song.

I was sort of joking, although I do like the early Genesis stuff.

When I saw the heading "long songs", Supper's Ready just instantly popped into my head.  I was transported back to the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance, circa 1980, when they'd have the annual listeners' all-time top 10 vote (Stairway, Shine On, Free Bird, something or other by Yes, etc etc)

Von Hertzen Brothers - War is over. Saw these as a supporting band, completely blew me away. Left the main act early who i had gone to see as they were such a let down after the Von Hertzen show..

and Avenged Sevenfold  - The Stage & Exist.. 25 minutes off their latest album. They get a lot of stick, but i still like em :)
