I have always believed that some songs were written about the music industry itself.  Examples, as I understand the lyrics, are:

The Eagles 'Hotel California'

Most of the brilliant Kinks album Lola Vs Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One is about the music biz. Great songs including (as has been mentioned) Top Of The Pops and Denmark Street.

And The Queen song Death On Two Legs is about an ex-manager of theirs. Freddie at his vitriolic lyrical best.
