Just trying an old Alesis Adat Ive had for ages, works fine and there something strangely nostalgic about recording to tape..

That said...I think it will end up going .

I have to say, that when I think of recording to tape, ADAT isn't what springs to mind!

I always equate 'recording to tape' as recording on analogue... pah! Nostalgia is wasted on the young!

Yeah !...I guess it’s an inbetween format ....I think it was the button pressing and FF / REW that took me back...

I was expecting this thread to be about analogue tape.

I had ADAT's way back when (early 90's).
This was a much better recording experience- the Studer that was in my shared studio space in Basel 2005-2007:

My last tape experience was a Fostex 16track recorder, it was pretty cool in its day.

My most ever fun recording was with my old Tascam 488. Still have it, but haven't recorded for many years.

I thought we were going to be talking about the good stuff too! =)

That said, I do remember recording to ADAT a little during my uni course - but even at the start of that in 2003 it was more "let's use these because we've not thrown them out yet". Same with the DAT tape machines and the rack-mounted hardware 1x real time CD-r burner - as soon as computers had enough storage space & decent enough audio interfaces, there wasn't much point in the standalones.

Still, there is something nice about the workflow - I think it's telling that when I've seen old pros wax lyrical about tape, as much of it is to do with the workflow, the limitations, and how simple things like waiting for tape to rewind, having to be on the ball for a punch-in, not being able to simply fly sections about and edit minor imperfections without serious time and effort, all contributed to make everyone bring their best to the session and also helped pace sessions.

And, to be fair, those things all apply to ADAT tapes just as well.

Plus, Jagged Little Pill is a pretty great album! ;)

Haha, yeah. I've still got mine sitting in a corner. I keep looking and thinking 'Hmmm...' but never do get round to using it. Can't bring myself to get rid of it though.

Brian Eno has made similar observations about equipment limitations provoking unexpected, imaginative solutions (A.K.A. creativity).

Paul White of Sound On Sound magazine has used his editorial column to lament the negative effect of home computer recording. Access to countless audio and MIDI instrument tracks encourages the deferment of irreversible decisions, thereby delaying the completion of the Project.

Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch EP took three hours to record and another two to mix. (Four songs, sixteen track analogue tape, many of those tracks almost certainly not required.) B'dum, b'dum.
    Be seeing you.
