Small 5 watt-ish amp

What's Hot

Does anyone have any suggestions for a small 5 watt tube combo akin to a Fender Tweed or Marshall in tone? I'm looking for something really simple as I'm not much of a knob twiddler (pardon?), preferably with either a 10" or 12" speaker. I should mention I'll be playing a Gibson ES-339 through it. Thanks in advance!

Why 5 watts? That size of amp can play very loud so IMHO you get a better sound from a more powerful amp. Check to Dennis Cornell amps and combos. Not very plentiful as players tend to hang onto them.

I'm looking for pretty early breakup and from my experience 5 watt-ish (depending on the specific circuit) amps seem to give me the right amount of breakup at a suitable volume.

Cornell’s are good, or else have a look at Rift Amps - Chris @RiftAmps is on here and has a Thread in the “Made in the UK” Section.

I think the Laney Lionheart L5T-112 would be a good shout, it takes pedals really well and is a great home use amp.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

  • Princeton and a pedal. Much more flexible and useful.

I'm utterly enamoured with my Fender '57 Custom Champ if it's any help. I realise it's a bit simple for many folk but the variety of sounds available just by adjusting guitar volume and playing dynamics is plenty for me. Sounds good with humbuckers, P90s and single coils.
It's an 8" speaker though, but some folk say that is where part of the magic lies.

How about the Laney VC15 that @andyman has in the classifieds?

I play a 335-style Yamaha and have a VC15, its small, sounds great at home and if you ever need more than 5w its there. Has a speaker out if you ever want to put it into a larger cab. Cheaper than Lionheart, lovely clean channel...

What you NEED is a vintage bassman with a UA Ox box.

Palmer Fab 5 is a great little amp - don't think they make them any more so would have to track down s/h.

If you can afford it, a Victoria 5112.

For less money, a Fender Pro Junior. I know it's 15W, but they sound very good and the Victoria might actually be louder...
