Like a lot of people here it seems most of mine will also be domestic! Another patio to build, guttering and fencing all
need replacing and god knows what else to stop the house falling down.

Main guitar related project is to finish (or more like start) a beautiful thinline tele/Jm hybrid build I’ve had the parts for since last April. So far all I’ve managed to get done is fixing the binding.

Not so much a project, but I’d love to find myself a great vintage hollow body this year - ES 330 or a nice old Guild. I suppose the project part of this would be earning the money to make it a reality!

Replace 4 windows and 2 external doors.
    Replace bathroom.
Repaint walls and ceilings in 7 rooms.
    Replace garage roof.
    Repair house roof.
Reorganise workshop, and build a better workbench.
    Rewire cellar.

In between all of this I want to:
    1. Build another headless guitar. This time with Tele pickups and wiring, and hex synth pickup.
    2. Integrate a guitar synth into my live rig.
    3. Build a second guitar. No idea what.
    Huh, not very ambitious!
Nothing wrong with ambition. Cellar rewiring was finished this morning. Waiting for quotes on the two roofs. They’ll probably be done in March. I like doing things myself, but I know people in their sixties who have died falling off roofs. The windows will be done in April. I’ve got a carpenter lined up for this. The bathroom will be after that because the new tiles will run right up to the window frame.

The workshop depends on the weather. It’s planned for February, but if the weather is dry then digging the garden will take precedence.

    Hmm...let's think...

    - Rewrite the forum software
    - Release the bad's album and tour it (HahAHahHAHHAhahahAHAhAa)
    - Get the forum YouTube channel off the ground
    - Put the Luminlay dots I bought at the beginning of the year into my self-build Nuno-alike.
    - Put together a cheap-ish low-power bench drill to put the Luminlay dots in
    - Re-think my Arduino-controlled pedal-based multi-effects idea
    - Build it
    - Lay a patio in the back garden
    - Replace the fences around the front garden
    - Replace the rear arches on my Puma (think this one will end up being somebody else paid to do it...I can learn things quick, but I think welding might be a step too far)

    Think that's it.
Imagine how shit life would be if you weren’t ambitious :)

    Renault Trafic conversion to campervan
Rebuild the Lawn Tractor we use in the woods
    Finish the Abomination project
I'd really like to build a guitar body from scratch....
Paint the rendered part of the house
Finally finish the Defender 90 rebuild, it's just had its fourth MOT since being rebuilt on a new chassis and there is still stuff to do....
Stranger from another planet welcome to our hole - Just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock 'n' roll

  • I thought this was a guitar forum  ;)

Assuming my current classical build results in a playable guitar, I'll have a go at building 6 string and 12 string acoustics in parallel.

I've previously built copies of 1956 (year of birth) Strat and Tele. Tempted to do a Les Paul, but I really don't need another electric guitar, so I'll probably build a 4 string tenor guitar inspired by the looks of a 1956 Les Paul TV special

Well, I have a few things in mind....

I have some left-over horse chestnut from the Chrimbo 2017 guitars that has a piece of rippled ash waiting to be attached and turned into a PRS-a-like short scale guitar named 'Yellowjacket' (my 6 1/2 yr old sons idea.....)

I have plans and O'Brien video to build a mandolin (wood already bought from David Dyke)

    6+12 double neck mahog/rippled ash/OilCity pickups/mahog neck

34" scale bass guitar in blue/green PRS-foil-a-like finish

3 x P90 mahog body with dark brown sunburst to edges, maybe flip-flop-metallic-paint finish instead

    Benedetto-style archtop

Possibly, *maybe*, haven't-decided-yet, a Celtic Harp for my wife for next Chrimbo.

Finish a Maloof-style rocking chair for friends

Start/finish Tweedle-Dee amp kit from Modulus

And once all that is done, and we're into March, I'll start on the garden :)

Possibly making my SG a Junior of sorts. Should be pretty cheap and easy if I can source a single humbucker pickguard and figure out the coil split wiring on a normal toggle.

Might get a new neck for my old strat. After playing a load of other fenders I think it's just the neck on mine I hate I want something with a soft v but at least 9.5" radius, which is proving harder to find for a reasonable price than I'd thought.

Going to have a go at making a couple of bodies & pickguards from scratch one for me and a lefty one for the daughter. Going for a Telemaster Jr vibe.

If you haven't already purchased the wood for the Benedetto arch top, I have virtually all the wood to do this. I was planning on doing one myself, but I've just never found the time. I have his book the full-sized planes, 2A book matched flamed maple for a arched back ( might be European flame Maple ) with matching  sides two sets, top quality book match Spruce top,  loads of Kerfed Cedrella linings, triple A ebony fingerboard. I'm not sure how much of the neck wood I still have, I will sort that out and let you know if you're interested. All the wood came DD

I also have Benedetto 17" cutaway mold.

     https://shop.rall-online.net/epages/61511639.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61511639/Products/19170030

I think that lot cost about £600 I going to sell it for £350 +P&P

That's the sales spill over with. I'm planning on having a massive clear out  a guitar bodies, necks, wood, hardware and anything else I've accumulated over half a lifetime of making guitars.

Now semi retired as far as building  guitars go, no more than one a week,  but with a maximum of 40 this year.

The workshop doesn't open again to February,  first job, 2 short scale  freebie basses for Chickenshed youngsters, 3  Les Paul Junior  DCs, 6 BM's, 2 Fenderbirds basses, that lot should take up to Easter. Then I start on Les Paul standards through the summer. Almost forgot. I think there's also a couple of four string stingrays to do.

That's presuming I ever get back to work, bad health over Christmas  heavy cold and cough, turned into a severe  chest infection ( unfortunately that happens if you're a asthmatic)   BP went sky high as a consequence, (I've suffered with high blood pressure for over 25 years, normally not problem) low SpO2%  readings, pulse through the roof. Now on extra blood pressure pills, antibiotics and steroids, but who's complaining I'm still alive.

Going off to a Spa Hotel in a couple of days to try and recover,  I think it might be kill or cure.

      Happy New Year everyone.

@GSPBASSES - That's a very kind offer, and I shall certainly consider it. I do have a selection of wood that I was going to use, but I don't honestly know how good it is - it came from a sawmill outside of Edinburgh and whilst the sycamore has ripple, it is very 'stainy', and there is a bit of twist on the spruce. Let me think on it. Would you consider splitting up?

    Cheers,

    Adam

Well, I've learned a valuable lesson - I tried to repair a ding in a variax acoustic, didn't work out as well as I'd like, so I thought I'd better strip all the varnish off back to the wood.   Tried Nitromors - the varnish just laughed at me.   Tried a heat gun, didn't work at all.    So I tried sanding it and after a while I learned that the wood is just a veneer on some kind of synthetic block.   So now I've got a full-on bodge to repair and I'm not sure how to do it.
    A marquetry veneer?

  • Hi everyone,

Joining this forum was actually part of my new year task. I've been silently reading this forum as a guest slowly gathering a little knowledge here and there over the years.

Long story short I used to play religiously for 10 years and was in a great band but life took over and my playing ability declined and so did my passion over another 9 years. Now's the time to make a change - upgrade my beat up strat and commit to learning a few songs.

Main reason I finally joined was to finally upgrade my guitar - it's a Strat copy that I've had for 19 years and the only electric i really play and own. After a horrible pickup upgrade a few years back and wearing out all the woodwork I decided it's time to properly go for a makeover. The aim is upgrade the neck and pickups for a start (neck has already arrived wooo) and then pester everyone on this forum for pickup recommendations. Then I'll see what I can restore from the body and think about a trem upgrade. Regarding pickups I've done a fair amount of research but looking to support a UK based dealer - separate post coming soon for that.

The other reason I joined was to get my playing back up to scratch so I've tasked myself to the end of the year to learn 3 songs:
    1. Neon by John Mayer
    2. Half of Eugene's Trick Bag by Steve Vai
    3. Pride and Joy by SVR
Random choices but I really appreciate both ends of the genre spectrum and using this forum as motivation.

Really looking forward to get active on this forum guys :-)

@DrPepper all sounds good. Welcome to the forum, its a great place to be! For pickups I can recommend Oil City and Allegree, they are both active here and make excellent pickups.

This year I will be finishing off the parts-caster I started last summer - in fairness there isn't much to do so shouldn't take me long.

I've also committed myself to building my own flavour of Les Paul special DC, and I will be first off all making a workshop in the back of my dad's garage so I have a proper place to work and store tools etc.  The workshop is already there, of sorts, it just needs a good tidy up and I have to persuade my father to chuck or sell some 'stuff' he doesn't, and never will, use.

He used to be a pattern maker so has lots of very nice tools already, but I've ordered a bunch of specialist tools to complement his collection. D
