Marshall Origin 20 Combo, sounds great clean, but has very little, if any, drive at low volume, so Im looking to buy a transparent, low gain drive pedal, to give me that just breaking up kinda tone, maintainig the core sound.....
Recommendations please....not too spendy.....

Ta!

My standard response is Nobels ODR-1, you can set it pretty much the same as the amp then add gain.

THE best 'transparent' low gain, imho, is the Greer Lightspeed.

Look at the Liquid Sunshine for sale on here - no affiliation OR more recently, I found the Fulltone Fulldrive 1 to be very good in the lower registers but then surprisingly, so's an OCD, which becomes almost Timmy-ish at the start of its gain register.

I think an OCD has already imposed its own sound on an amp quite heavily even before you add gain, I'd never describe it as transparent.

    Marshall Bluesbreaker.

  • The only pedal I've found that doesn't alter the EQ of a signal before passing through to the amp is the TC Electronic Spark Boost. The Timmy, which many people say is transparent, definitely changes the sound when adding dirt, however much you fiddle with the EQ.

The LS on here is my old one - I used to use it for exactly what you're describing. Just the same basic tone with more "hair". Cracking pedal for that purpose.

Or go Klone if you want something with a bit more "roundnessy oomph"

Thanks for the replies folks, theres loads to look at...
@ICBM I must admit I was considering staying in house and trying a Blues Breaker pedal

Bloody pedals are such a minefield!......

Edit...as a starter for ten, I've ordered a Blues Breaker pedal, cheap as chips, virtually disposable, I'm sure more will follow!....

Mmm..I'd say the same of the Nobels but I think they'd both work. The Greer is probably the best one mentioned here, but also the most expensive
