Should I run a mile? LP heel break content

Hi all, in the quest for a beater I have seen a LP Studio on Crap Converters' Scunthorpe eBay site.

Does this look like a full on heel break?

Cheers!

The money they're asking is about what unbroken studios go for - honestly don't think one as beaten up as that is worth the money.

You see that's I thought until I kept seeing them circa £700. Early/mid 90s are my target years.

Yes, the neck has been detached from the body. It must have been some whack.

    Yes.

That depends on how well attached it was in the first place...

The cost of a proper repair and respray is more than the guitar, as seen, is worth.

I received the below reply from their eBay man, Ryan:

’Hi there good morning no it hasn't had a break there is a slit split in the wood I would say from age but not a break.
    Many thanks Ryan’

  • It’s badly broken. I might pay  up to £250 for it as a diy repair project, it would probably make no economical sense at all if you were to pay someone to fix it.

    Two miles, minimum.
    I'd then keep power walking.

It does depend to a degree on whether it's been glued properly, and if not, what with... the cutaway side looks very tight, but I'm less sure about the bass side. If it's not tight it will be a right pig to re-do if the glue isn't the right sort.

It also depends on the original joint - it's *very* unusual for a Les Paul to come apart at the neck joint instead of breaking at the headstock, so I suspect it was like that Special in the pics above - a very poor fit with shims. Unless it's now been properly shimmed and glued thoroughly, it will always be weak. And there's no way of telling without taking it apart again... unless you know a friendly radiologist.

So I think Henrytwang's valuation is about right, or even a bit high.
