    That is somewhat a testament to how successful it was as a protocol.

    It has needed updating for a while now, especially as we have so many controller devices.
    I am not sure I can think of a connection/protocol technology that has remained essentially unchanged for 36 years.

    It should be fully backwards compatible, they seem to be pushing that as one of the main features.

    I can remember a mate of mine working on a MIDI alternative back in the late 80's, it was called ZIPI or something like that. I'm amazed how long MIDI has lasted.

    1 - It was feature-complete in terms of the technology it was designed to work with.

    2 - They resisted scope creep at all costs.
