Over ear cans to use with Fractal.

I've looked through the existing threads and am a bit lost.

Have just scored an Axe FX + and need a set of cans to hear my ham-fisted playing.

Budget around £180 ish. I'm fussy and look after kit so want them to last. Detachable cable would be preferred to mitigate broken cable/connector problems.

Closed/open back. I'm not expert so do need a bit of gentle guidance.

Many thanks in advance.

Open back sound more natural, in fact I often have to take mine off to check the sound is coming through the headphones rather than my desk monitors as I get confused- closed back seem more boxy.

i use Sennheiser HD650 that I bought used for about your budget.

My HD650 headphones sit unloved since I moved on to the HD660S. I can take some photos if anyone is interested in buying or trading them for something that would interest me.

HD600 are more neutral sounding. I picked up a set for £120, and replaced the headband and ear pads with good quality clones.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

  • I use AKG 702s with my AFX.  Sound superb and just over £100.

AKG K702s for studio listening which includes playing through my Kemper.  I recently replaced the cable (which is detachable) but I may need to open them up again and check the soldered joint as there is an intermittent fault (I've had mine a couple of years and they do get flung about a bit doing location stuff).

As with all open backed headphones there is a lot of spill.  I do use them when I'm practicing early in the morning before the family are up but I need to keep the studio door shut.

  • Check out Studiospares https://www.studiospares.com/Headphones-and-Speakers/Headphones-Studio.htm# Personally I'd go for closed back studio headphones as you can also use them for recording acoustic/vocals etc if you want. Beyer, AKG etc are all good makes, Studiospares own headphones are amazing value and sound excellent too.
