  • At this point I should add when I say "more" i mean features/flexibility, not volume!

Definitely not interested in anything more powerful than a regular DR...

You could get a second hand 65RI and mod it? Fritz mod for reverb on both channels and in phase, you could then try various tonestack mods.

  • Youtube has just shown me some great sounding clips of the Mesa Filmore 25. No trem and 2 channels, which I don't need, but sounds (and looks) great. Anyone tried one?

If you're leaning that way, there's also the new Boogie California Tweed- still no trem, but also no second channel.

Not sure if I'm leaning or just looking over the fence, but the Fillmore definitely sounds good on demos, and a better package than the Tweed, I think, since it's nice and small. Ive just discovered a music shop in Dubai that I didn't previously know about, who sells PRSi and Mesa stuff, so will go see if they have either.

The Cali Tweed does sound really nice in all the videos. It just looks so cream :s

Yeah, possibly. I can live without trem, for sure, if everything else is spot on. It mainly depends how good the MV is on the Boogie, and whether it has any of the signature Mesa "thump" that my old Express had - I don't want that :D

    That looks worse, somehow!!

IIRC Mesa do custom colours etc. I dread to think how much that would cost...

Minor update, just tried a Mesa Fillmore 50. Really very impressed. It feels like more than j would ever need in terms of range, but hard to find a bad sound in there. It’ll happily go from Mayer up to AC/DC sorts of gain, though I only had a PRS CE to demo with, which isn’t my “usual wheelhouse”, so difficult to judge character completely, but a really good amp.

I think the 25 would be pretty much perfect, if a little expensive(!).

There’s just a little bit of me that wonder if a really nice home-built DR could be even better if used with attenuation/load box

For a 'clean' sound and looking at the amp settings, that's a pretty gritty low headroom sound. Stick a Gibson into that and I'm not sure how clean that amp will ever get. You can hear the Strat make it start to distort even on the 50Watt mode and the pre-amp set low and that's a single coil!
To me it doesn't sound like a Deluxe Reverb at all but then again I have never owned one myself; just a Twin Reverb.
Yeah. I don't really want clean-clean in the way a Twin does, but the slightly-hairy thing when a DR is on 4 or 5, that nice dynamic squashy sort of sound (and more important - feel).

That said, I still want to build more amps (and pedals, and guitars...)

Ta - already watched that one this morning. He is really annoying, but that is a really really good sounding amp. The EL34 thing put me off a little, but it does sound good.

No dealers out here, but will see about trying one next time I'm home. Might also build a DR in the meantime...

Of course I also need to sell at least one guitar and one amp if not more before any of this becomes relevant
