In terms of hardware, Macs are underpowered and expensive compared to what you can build in a PC. One can easily spec a very powerful PC for much less money.

A well configured PC with Windows 10 is very stable for making music.

But if you want to make some phat beatz on your iWatch, Apple has you covered.

(I regularly use both PCs and Macs)

I run a dual-boot machine. One partitution is a hackintosh running High Sierra, and the other runs Windows 10.

There's no real reason for my to use the Hack partition anymore, but I still do coz I like the OS and the way it works. But all of my software apart from Logic Pro X (which I rarely use) is cross-platform.

Apple hardware is not superior in anyway. Rumours are they're moving towards dropping the Intel chips:

I run VMs in a Mac laptop for work.

The problem with the Mac mini was that they made it brain-dead by welding the memory to the motherboard. They've then released a new model, but it is just plain too expensive.

However, most Mac users go for laptops anyway and there's nothing on the market that matches a Mac laptop.

Sadly that's true, which is why I just bought a new one.

As for my last Mac Mini, it was one of the best from 2010-11, upgraded RAM, 512gb SSD, i7. Until the logic board went poof. And now it's a doorstop. If that had happened on my home-built PC I would have just bought a new mobo. So no more Mac Minis for me.

The Mac Mini business model depends very much on the purchaser already having a suitable mouse, keyboard and monitor. Nowadays, you can add a trackpad and an external optical disc drive to that list.

I fancied buying one but the outlay for a proper monitor and a Thunderbolt-compatible audio/MIDI interface were prohibitive.

    hackintosh
This is an increasingly tempting option. I have a Mac Pro G5 shell that I could gut for such a project.

Pretty much have to agree with everything that Rick said in that video.

Simultaneous built-in obsolescence and built-in customer infantilisation, railroading users into having to do or buy stuff that should not be necessary.

Software part is easy assuming you have it for PC. What sound card/device do you have?

A ballache if you use logic. Because your projects wont just open in any DAW. And plugins wouldn't be linked anyway due to the differences between Audiounits and VST's.

  • I work in the design industry and where Mac was once king, it's becoming less ubiquitous, as there's never enough ports, everything needs a converter and they're massively overpriced. I'm going to replace my work Mac Pro with a Windows Surface this year, and I can't wait.

IIRC he uses Studio One. So it kind of depends if you used AU or VST, also some shortcuts may change due to the different keyboard

My Mac mini 2011 pooped too and I haven't replaced it.

I'm now using a Dell micro running Linux as my main desktop.

Isn't that the case with other PCs too?
