It's a remake apparently. I'll give it a look, but I'm of the opinion that some things don't need re-making.

    I've got the original on DVD, that was pretty grim;
How grim do people want their entertainment to be?

Not properly grim unless everyone dies at the end pointlessly. So.. you know..

    Ditto for horror movies.

The Mist. Brutally grim. Sets the standard for horror movie grim

Not a remake, follows on from the original (in quite a novel way - no spoilers), when Bletchley Park was sinking more U-Boats and with the USA joining in it was clear that Germany would ultimately lose the war.

The first movie - you could smell the fuel-oil and sweat.

I watched it.   Thought it was very good. I hadn’t realised it was set after the first one and there might be a 3rd series in the future which would be cool.

  • Must check that out. Saw the film when it first came out (best watched in German with Subtitles).
Been on the Movie set tour (still there after all these years). Filmed outside Munich you couldn't get further from the sea.

In the mid 90's I went to see U534 at Birkenhead. It had just been salvaged from the north sea where it had been sunk in 1945. They were doing tours round it 'as found'. It's now been restored and cut into 5 sections for public display. It was a fascinating day out and brought it home how brave the sailors were manning the things, fifty of them in a narrow tube for months on end. There's no doubt they wouldn't allow tours like that now, crawling in and out of the small hatches on grounds of elf and safety. In the rear torpedo room there was still the huge wooden wedges that had been rammed into the splits in the hull from the depth charges which had sunk it. Incidentally the tour guide for the day was called Gerry.

So how can you watch it. I've searched the internet and it seems it's only on some Australian service.

The original is in my top ten. Fantastic film
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

Wish I had Sky as i’d like to see this.

Only recently read that the U-boat in Raiders of the Lost Ark is the one used in the original Das Boot.

It’s on Sky Atlantic so you can get it via Now Tv Entertainment for £7 a month. That’ll also get you Walking Dead and Game of Thrones if that tickles yer fancy.

I've never really understood the notion of remakes. You wouldn't rerecord an album of someone else's would you? Would you rewrite another's book?

I don't see the art or skill in remaking someone else's film. IMO a film is a discreet piece of work, self contained and finite. Once done, done.

No I think remakes are cheap and lazy. Easy money, but artistically crass.

If it was a remake you'd be right, only it isn't.
