What's Hot

Marc Bolan was my icon at 11 years old............but I did like Dave Hill's stacked heel boots and star shaped glitter Guitar

    Slade are cheese on toast.
T.Rex are better but Bowie was better than all of them.

    Suzi Quatro.

    :)

But of those two... T.Rex. Slade were better musicians by far, but Bolan just had that elusive 'something' that made him and his songs iconic.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

Definitely T.Rex, Holder's voice gave me nightmares when I was nine, and is still nails down a blackboard every Christmas.

Bowie is not even in the running. I watched a documentary about his early years the other night, and if you've ever wondered why he's the only superstar living or dead who's never had his back catalogue plundered, remastered and re-released you should watch it.

He was unutterably shit, and would perform any terrible old hokum you can imagine. His only goal was fame within any niche he could carve, without the slightest interest in actual quality.

So yeah, Suzi Quatro every time for confused, pre-pubescent me.
    :)

  • Given my 5th member of the band status obviously I’d say Slade.

Okay I have a very vague connection to Dave Hill and an even vaguer one to Noddy. Most, possibly all, of the episodes of Marc are on YouTube with Herbie Flowers on bass in his band and a weird collection of guests ( including Bowie backed by the studio band).

Im not entirely sure they’d count as glam but Mud I liked a lot at the time and the only band mentioned so far I’ve ever taken the trouble to go and see live. Sweet I like in retrospect but they weren’t on my radar at the time.

This, absolutely. Their B sides were brilliant!

Out of the the two original choices I’d go T Rex, but only because I never really liked Slade. I’ve actually got a ticket stub for a T Rex gig, but I’ve got to admit I’ve no memory of seeing them play.  :#

The reason I wanted to learn to play guitar was watching both T-Rex and Slade on Top of the Pops - I started to learn in 1974 and both bands were big at the time

You later move on to other bands etc that influence you

But as a 14 year old then both of these artists are the reason I'm doing what I'm doing

Won't pick one over the other

    have seen Slade live twice

Slade for me, being a West Midlands kid, but T Rex close behind. Suzi Q got my attention in a slightly different way, of course. I'm now 58, and hoping to bump into Jimmy Lea or Dave Hill when I go to get my guitars set up as they're friends of the guitar tech. I know it's uncool to faint with excitement, but I don't I'll be able to help it.
    Call me Dave.

The skins and suedes liked Slade, all those girls in their Crombies and Ben Sherman's - scary. Marc's fans on the other hand were the hot girls in satin and velvet tat. No contest. Who's going to romance a girl between the sheets? Noddy yelling about being crazee now or Marc warbling through Prophets Seers and Sages?..

T-Rex/MB was cool, slade could never claim to be that.
    Had some stonking tunes tho.

I was born in '76 but have both in my collection (much more T-Rex).

    This.

Their recordings still hold up well even now. Play them at any party to see the reaction.

Slade. Good Bye To Jane was the second single that I bought as an 11 year old (Andy Kim's Rock Me Gently being the first).

Apparently Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody is the most listened to record in the world, and earns the band over £500,000 every year in royalties.
