Two of my favourites from the 90s:

    • "Safesurfer" by Julian Cope; intro solos by Julian Cope & Michael "Moon-Eye" Watts (Peggy Suicide, 1991) - none more Ronson!!
    • "Glory Box" by Portishead; solo by Adrian Utley (Dummy, 1994)

Best Pop Song Solo of the 90's is by whoever played the solo on "The One and Only" by Chesney Hawkes.

    Solo at 2:34

    :)
It was written and co-produced by Nik Kershaw so I’d assume him. I saw Nik live, long time ago now but my memory of it was he stuck a blazing solo in the middle of every song.
I thought it was Nik - found an interesting short interview with the 2 of them and no-one else is mentioned. Nik Kershaw says "The song has bought me a couple of houses" ... nice! He's a superb player.

  • This also springs to mind, I remember tying my fingers in knots learning the riff... Then there's the outtro solo! John Squier, take a bow.

For pure fusion Zarabeth by Allan holdsworth. For pop i think you do something to me by Paul Weller.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

My vote goes for Everythign I Do I Do It For You - absolutely guff song with a sublime guitar solo. When this was being played EVERYWHERE, that guitar solo kept me sane.

Skip the guff and head straight for 2:40

Yeh, I googled it and found that as well. I guess it’s possible someone else did the solo but it doesn’t get mentioned in those interviews or on the song’s Wikipedia page.

Funnily enough, this just popped up in my YouTube feed, RATM is a good shout - this guy can really play if you haven’t heard him before.

  • I’ll have to dig out the Arc Angels album again (1992) as that’s probably my favourite guitar based album of the 90s. So, it’ll be some solo off that.
