Les Paul fretboard inlays are lifting - help!

What's Hot

So I just noticed that three of the fretboard inlays on my Gibson LP Traditional 2017 are lifting on one side. It's like a nasty ridge that I can feel quite badly when bending a string on those frets.

Any advise?

They go down, but they don't stay down. I think the glue has come unstuck.

    I had the same problem

I ended up taking it to John at Feline to fix, as I wanted to be 100% sure the problem was solved once and for all.

Cheers. BTW - did you oil the fretboard prior to the problem?

No, I’ve never been big on oiling fretboards - my fingers are greasy enough.

  • Yeah I had the same problem on my 2013 standard. Got my local guitar tech to sort it, apparently wasn't too hard just needed re gluing. I think he charged me an hours labour

Now I dance to the tune of Gibson as much as the next fretboarder, but come on now glue failing? That’s ridiculous

Glue can fail. (Witness - the innards dropping out of Seymour Duncan Li’l ‘buckers.)

Truss rods can make a bid for freedom through the fingerboard.

Agreed, surely the shop you bought it from can arrange for it to be fixed for free?

Wouldn't be a Gibson if it was perfect.

I bought it from Dawsons in Chester in Jun 2017. I emailed them just now and they said that if I can bring the guitar in for them to inspect, they can then speak to Gibson regarding the issue. Once they've seen it, they can take it from there.

I want to avoid making unnecessary trips to Chester if they're going to say I'm out of luck.

Update - Dawsons say that if this is covered under warranty it would need to go back to Gibson or one of their registered repairers. Hmmm...sounds like a faff.

If they make it too easy they'd be inundated.

(Not just Gibson but anything in general really, in all walks of life).

Of course it's covered under the warranty so either Dawsons or Gibson must fix it unless they can clearly prove that it's been caused by something you've done.  Take it back; it's part of the sale price  ultimately.

They asked for photos and a scan of receipt of purchase which they will "forward to Gibson".

I've got a feeling this is going to take a long time...

If this was me I’d suck it up and take it to a reputable tech. Life’s too short.
