Painting a guitar neck

Hi everyone
Have any of you tried to paint a guitar neck without removing the fingerboard?
I may be on the wrong track, but looking at the job, simply masking off the finger board, looks like it could leave an 'edge' of paint and lacquer, that could potentially a) feel rough when played and b) provide and edge, that when played, could also lead to chips in the finish.

You only mask off a fretboard if you're tinting or painting a colour, when that's done you clear coat over the whole neck so there's no line

Keeping a finish really thin is very important to keep it from being a thick finish
