anyone know if one can connect a usb3 device to macbook pro with only usb2?

...... using some kind of adapter? I know that it won't work directly. Its a 2013 MBP so also has thunderbolt ports.

I've been fishing around the internet for info for some time and my head is about to explode!

    Yes but you will only achieve usb2 speed. Just use the USB port on your Mac.

    You can also get a thunderbolt/usb3 adapter which will give you full usb 3 speed.

    Are you sure your 2013 MBP does not have usb3? Early and late 2013’s have usb3 iirc.

    Nah, the device I have specifically only works with USB3 - only found out after buying the bloody thing!

    almost definitely a power requirement then, so use a powered usb3 hub

    Some USB2/3 things can be a bit pernickety.
    Have you tried the Lightning-USB adapter option?
