A friend who used to work with him has just told me about this.

Very sad and always a sprightly and happy soul

RIP

Shitting Hell thats sad, 56 bloody years old and seemed in great shape (seen them live a couple of times recently and he was built like a racing snake). In a great band alongside his son and always appeared really happy :-(

    RIP

EDiIT - just read he was battling lung cancer , poor sod.

It's on The Beat website and even on his Wikipedia page. No cause given but he had some kind of stroke last year.
Not that much older than me, such an energetic man, full of passion for many things. He had a lot of regret for the way The Beat originally ended and he did a lot to make amends. I saw him about a year ago, great gig. The Beat did a BBC Alba session a couple of years ago I must have watched ten times on the iPlayer.
Well, sad news. Some people are their own invention and Roger was that.

Sad news. My band supported The Beat a few years ago and we briefly met Roger. He seemed a very kind, friendly bloke and as DrCorelius says, was built like and moved like an athlete.

I suspect Jonathan Ross is the only person who's seen any positive side to that.

Truly gutted by this, and incredibly, I never did get to see The Beat in any formation, live...

    My fave two-tone band ever.

Blimey, Cos, don't know how I missed this until now. That's way too young, very sad. The Beat were great and such a great music movement of the time. He was an iconic figure.

    Two years today, wow.

His son ( Matthew Murphy aka Ranking Jr) released a track in the last few days. Backing band is The Ordinary Boys if you remember them ( Jr did the toasting/ rap on their hit Boys Will be Boys).
