I can't describe how angry I'm getting at political parties (mostly UKIP and the Tories) suggesting we leave the EU so we can get out of the EU convention on Human Rights.

I really do despair. I quite like having rights.

UKIP also want to repeal the 1998 UK Human Rights Act not just the European Convention On Human Rights And FundamentalFreedoms.
The UKHR act wasn't brought in by looney Eurocrats, it was first drafted after WWII and was inspired by Winston Churchill.
So far from it being some Euro/Socialists wet dream it was designed to give people rights and uphold the liberal traditions of the UK. It's our basic rights.

Why would anyone want to remove basic human rights?

Oh and there's this going on in the other subforum. It's lots of fun ;-)

I've never liked UKIP over their stance on energy sources etc - they're all for nuclear power and I'm not really a fan...

Strangely enough the tory backed media that have a constant anti-UKIP stance day in and day out are achieving the opposite of what they hoped to do and are actually swelling support for UKIP.

Even I am getting sick of the anti-UKIP stance on most of LBC's radio shows and feel like backing the underdog as a result.

The European Court of Human Rights established by the European Convention on Human Rights has nothing to do with the EU. They are seperate bodies.

    Yes....

it's a good thing it's not going to happen then, isn't it? hmm ... a bit of reality in these debates might see more agreement about what a better future might be.. and how to get there.

I'm not sure it's possible for the two to co-exist, but no doubt someone will let us know.

We already have Sharia Law in this country, and have done since at least 2006. There are around 85 Muslim Arbitration Tribunals in the UK according to a report by Civitas. They mostly deal with breaking down marriages, but do not have any oversight of criminal law and do not overule British law.

We also have similar Judaic courts.

The only thing I like about UKIP is their non-interventionist policy in foreign affairs. I don't think they are racists but they do attract a lot of ex-BNP and ex-NF people. Whether by design or coincidence, I don't want to speculate. Their politics of fear suck, though. Base a political party on positive policies, not on playing up the public's fear.

The recent action by Subway to introduce Halal meat could be seen as an example of Sharia Law being introduced without the consent of the larger public but I think the post by Phil was regarding Sharia Law that impinged on Municipal Law.

"We" (as in non-Muslim UK citizens) don't have Sharia Law, Muslims in the UK have Sharia Law that they can adhere to but are there is no legal requirement other than in the drafting of wills that Muslim men can have made by their solicitors which are valid and binding in the UK but only within Muslim marriages, they are cannot be enforced on people of any other faith. Still, kinda sucks if your a female Muslim and you're gonna get jack shit when your husband drops dead cus it all goes to his brother.

185 stores out of nearly 2000, all in areas with Muslim populations, and all places were there are multiple stores within a close distance. Subway are just giving their local markets what they want.

@KarlosSantos is right. Moslems can obey Sharia Law in their own communities if they like so long as they're not breaking our national & local laws. However if they want to impose any of their laws on ME, or set up Sharia Law as higher precedence than our national & local laws, they can all FOAD.

Oh I absolutely agree. Makes commercial sense to cater for the people that use the stores. It has been reported by the press as Sharia Law by the back door though and it is divisive but I guess it's only an issue if you aren't able to get any other Subway anywhere, which as we know, is nonsense cus they are everywhere...they've probably built 3 more in the UK whilst I've been typing this.
