Bit of a shame how the bottom has fallen out of the magazine market. I used to wait for the day every month when Guitarist was released to see all the new gear. Now you can see everything on youtube or PremierGuitar as it's released. Instant gratification eh?

Guitarist lost its way many years ago, the only mag I buy these days is Sound on Sound

Like a lot of people, I took it for years and then got tired of the same articles, transcriptions and artists being recycled so I gave up on it. There were some really good tutorials at the back but not enough to keep me shelling out. I haven't taken it for years now and don't really miss it, if the truth be told.

I used to spend hours going through the small ads, all 12 pages. Now there's 1!!

Haven't bought a mag for years.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I still buy an odd one here and there, but not terribly often.

Mags are the root of uncontrollable GAS, they are not terribly honest with their reviews (I can tell you why if you PM me) and are generally pretty light in the tuition department.

I would like to see less blah and more in depth subjects about DIY, maintenance, music theory, artist masterclasses, etc...

Yep, buy it every month... Heads and shoulders above the other mags imho, and still inspires occassionally

I'm pretty sure my opinions on gear are worth what you pay for them. Actually I often suspect I'm overcharging.

To be fair, you do read an awful lot of guff on forums. I'm not suggesting that Guitarist's writers were ultimate arbiters of all things guitar, but they didn't perpetuate some of the bullshit myths that some people do on various forums.

    Loobs,

I know what you are saying, but equally, half the bloody reviews are skewed by advertising spend and freebies. I'm sure of that.

Equally equally, I'm sure a lot of 'seeding' takes place on some of the guitar forums.

Of course, of course. I think generally their writers were pretty on point, I never took too much notice of the gear reviews. I worked there for a while when I was younger, as an intern, and those guys are very knowledgeable. Mick Taylor is also a great guitar player.

I think they've become too focused on Blues and Acoustic music now. They used to have a pretty good balance but in the last few years I've taken less and less interest in the magazine.

I used to buy it without fail every month but now I'll get it if theres something of interest which may be about once every 6 months.

I'm glad that Simon Bradley no longer does the demos now. He managed to make everything sound the same and always dialed in really shitty tones.

Guitar Techniques is becoming the same too. How many times can they milk the pentatonic scale

What does piss me off is the way they'll (any mag) will use a name on the cover to over-exaggerate the content

e.g exclusive Gilmour tone break down inside = half a page of pentatonic scale maps.

Bought it from issue 1. Cancelled my last subscription last year and thought I might buy it issue by issue but when ever I look at it can't be arsed. Same with all of them TBH, I buy Guitar Player or Guitar World if they look interesting and they have slightly different stuff to the UK mags.
I'm not interested in hi tech stuff and for stuff like guitar and amp reviews I can look at the picture, look at the spec and 99% guess the review content.I like interesting artist interviews ( ie a good interview regardless of the artist) and the UK mags struggle to deliver that.
The stupidity of The Vault bugged me enormously -made it hard to access content I was paying for, meanwhile half the stuff I was reading was freedom line anyway.

I don't know about other specialist publications ( fnarr fnarr) but I sometimes buy scooter mags ( engines, two wheels - not the ones for small children). Seems to be a simple divide between the in depth monthly ones and the glossy newbie bi- monthlies. They don't attempt to be everything to everyone.

If I did that, I'd probably be quite a bit better.

I remember a while back, they did a petrucci one. Bloody terrifying.

Compared to some pth, it's pretty normal...

I've resigned myself to being average to poor (at best ;))

    True.

Though you could possibly argue they perpetuate some other ones. :))

No. I found I was flicking past more and more of the articles. Also we are all able now to find out anything about any product as soon as the information is available, via the net.

Guitar magazines were a huge part in my learning to play, and when I was young and had the time i'd learn every lesson in there. Now they just seem like a needless extravagance.

'Bye Guitarist. Thanks for the good times.
