Almost Famous...

What's Hot

Yes, I know you all saw it years ago, but I just saw it today and rather enjoyed it.

I found myself spotting the odd well known individual wandering around in the background.  Looking on the web I seem to have spotted a fair few, but in the early stages did I see someone uncredited?

In the Black Sabbath backstage section, was Nuno Bettencourt, just standing against the wall for ages (behind the actors)?

Maybe just a random hairy extra and it was the Calvedos talking...

I love that film. It captures how exciting and mysterious music was back then, before tinternet and social media where the only way you found out about bands was either TOGWT, your mate's older brother's record collection or the music press. Sounds and Melody Maker were like the bible to us young music fans back in the early 70s.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) as Lester Bangs is brilliant. "The only true currency in this bankrupt world.." etc. Also Jimmy Fallon as Dennis Hope their new super manager..

It's worth seeking out the longer version for a couple of deleted scenes (great late night radio segment).. plus a longer shots at the gigs etc.

Wonderful film. Even better than the film is the soundtrack.

    It's amazing.

Me and my friend used to watch it, along with Dumb and Dumber several times a week for what feels like years

  • That's my "chicken soup" movie. If ever I'm feeling under the weather I watch Almost Famous & it usually makes me feel better.

I had chickenpox when I was 28 and watched it twice a day for nearly a fortnight. I might dig it out again for a refresher..

    Stillwater!

Another cameo is Peter Frampton as Humble Pie's roadie.

'Stillwater' are based on Cameron Crowe's experience with a British rock band in the 70's with a notoriously temperamental singer....There are a couple of giveaways as to who it is in the film...did anyone get it? :)

I had read, years ago... that Russell was based on Glenn Frey but there are references in the movie to

    Led Zeppelin
    Allman Brothers
    The Who
    Kiss

    Great film.
After first viewing I bought the directors cut edition with the extra scenes and the 'Stairway outtake. Yes, I did queue up the CD and play them both together.

I was outraged that such a film that glorified drug use and promiscuity was ever released and they never asked me to be in it.

I haven't seen that for many a year, must watch it again, my recall was that I really enjoyed it. I do remember that Kate Hudson was very sexy!

Stillwater is mostly based on the Allman Brothers, but there's loads of Eagles and Led Zeppelin bits (I am a Golden God etc.) thrown in there too.

@RaymondLin is the content on the Bluray the same as Collector's Edition? I have the "Untitled" and original DVD versions but both with slightly different artwork. Mmmm.

    Running time

    Theatrical cut 2 hr 3mins (Region 1)
    Director's cut 2 hr 42mins (Region 1)
Extended Cut (Bluray) 2 hr 21min

The Director's cut also comes with a Stillwater CD - 6 tracks from the film inc Fever Dog.

The artwork is different because i used to buy Region 1 DVDs mostly.  There are more contents on the Director's cut.
