Well, in my opinion ....

An email advertised workshop came through this week:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leading Career Conversations with a Growth Mindset

Workshop Aims:

· To transform the way managers and staff think, feel and act by developing a growth mindset for success and holding effective career conversations.

By the end of this session all attendees will feel able to:

· Build the link between a growth mindset and how we approach career conversations and career development

· Apply the tools and techniques of Talent Talks with confidence

· Take a positive approach to the career conversation that enables consideration of career trajectories and identifies the right development.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seriously, WTF are they talking about? Actually, don't bother answering that!

I can't believe that we actually employ people to come up with this garbage.

Rant over ....

Growth mindset has its origins at Stanford Research Institute, and the last I heard it was being piloted as a suitable subject to teach very young children.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

At least that’s only a workshop. I saw a Dept of Health job advertised in the British Medical Journal over 20 years ago. The ad stated........Wanted. Someone to scan blue skies (scanning blue skies thinking was very trendy back then!!!). The salary offered was £80,000 plus expenses.

I usd to get that bullshit when I was working for BT.  I was once called Mr Grumpy cos I wouldn't get out of my seat and jump in the air like everyone else when prompted by a corporate Timmy Mallet type. FFS I was a software developer not a bleeding sales monkey.

Lol 'Talent Talks'.. that's so cheesy it's quite epic in its blandness.

It's not being hosted by a bunch of leftovers from the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet Ship B purchance?

    Nope.

I've read that twice, and I still haven't found a single discernible benefit or skill that I'd feel comfortable putting on my CV.

My general rule with training courses, is that if they don't result in a skill, qualification or knowledge that I would want to put in a job application, it's a waste of time.

This sounds like a back hander to a vacuous life coach type who plays golf / rugby with one of the high ups.

If you watch most adverts on tv, say for cars or chocolate particularly but it holds true for a lot of products, they give you little information on the product and lots of feel-good images or buzzwords, or aspirational people or scenery that make you want what they’re selling, whatever it is.

That email is coming from the same place: you don’t need to know what the product (ie the workshop) actually contains, just buy it. And probably a similar pitch was made by the training company to your organization’s training department persuading them to pay money for this workshop.

Since that indirect appeal works so well in mainstream advertizing it’s not a surprise that it’s been adopted more widely.

Prof. Costa. If I remember correctly it's origins trace back to military intelligence. A teacher friend of mine looked into it, and it sounded like an interesting topic at the time

All the mindful shit is so that HR can discipline you for loosing your rag (hence not being mindful or having emotional intelligence)  at management inabilities and inanities

Oh god. First it was Lean, which was then re-branded as Continuous Improvement. I can see my boss falling for this latest incarnation as soon as someone in management or HR starts promoting it. I will endure the pointless problem-solving workshops that will undoubtedly ensue as I have the others that have come before. I just detach myself from this nonsense and concentrate on getting better at doing my job, as I always have.
