  • Work commute is about 25 minutes by car, Uni commute is about the same by car plus another 40 minutes by train and then walking. I somehow much prefer the uni commute though knowing that I'm not going to work at the end of it.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

If public transport is behaving itself, then about 45 minutes each way.

Mine is between 45min-90mins depending on traffic, just for another 3 weeks when I start a job 10 minutes down the road..

Commuting gets so boring, same route, same people same problems .. If I leave the next job it'll be to work from home.

In the past I've done long stints of both car and train commuting.

Train commuting can become harder than expected if the line becomes unreliable - I'd regularly lose extra hours per day.

When I car commuted125 miles (total) a day it was my physical health that suffered - endless back trouble.

    I wouldn't do either again

About an hour each way on various forms of London public transport.

In some ways they're my favourite parts of the day, I can sit and read a book with no-one emailing or phoning or expecting me to be doing two or three other things at once.

About 21 miles through the countryside. Takes a little over 30 mins and I don't push past slow traffic (because there's not much opportunity anyway). I sometimes vary the route home as a change of scenery.
I have done much longer commutes for good money or advancement, but regard that as a waste of my time now and that is more important.

I go from (near) Newport to Bristol Park Street every day. it's only 35 miles but it can take hours. If I leave the house by 6:40 I can get to the A4 Park and Ride early enough to get into work for 8am. Or I can train it from Newport and get to work 8.10am. On the way home, if I drive from the P&R, it can take between 90 minutes and 2 hours (or how long is a piece of string) thanks to the awful traffic going back into Wales every night. And believe me, I know all the alternative routes and shortcuts...

They're pretty flexible here though, so if I don't need to be in the office I can always work from home with enough notice. I work from home most Fridays to avoid the traffic.

I commuted for years. About 45mins to an hour each way. Was only a 35 mile journey but the m40 was always silly.
Now live in the same town as I work and it takes me 5mins. Best decision I’ve made in that regard.

About 25 miles each way, almost entirely motorway so 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. My last job was about 8 miles but that took longer as it was criss crossing a built up area. Today was really quick and the sun is out but even then it's pretty boring yet I've still got to be focused as I'm on the M5 at 70mph.

I usually work at home one day per week. I also do a lot of visits sometimes a fair old distance but I guess that adds a bit of variety.

My commute into Birmingham city centre for a year or so by bus was the worst. I hated that journey. Tedious, slow, unreliable, lot of trouble. Someone was followed off the bus route I took and stabbed to death. Not the  bus I was on but the same route 20 minutes earlier.

Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

Mines the shortest I've had in years which is about 45-50 minutes in the car. Not too bad and I get home before 5 most days, Fridays can be difficult. I'd love to work within cycling distance. I could probably do it now but not every day to sustain it.

To the office is 30 - 35 min drive each way, visit to customer or one of our plants could be between 2 and 4 hours drive each way in uk or a couple of hours flight + 1 or 2 hours drive in Europe (once or twice per month).  I haven't done long haul for a few years now.

A few years ago I was managing a team who were spread across Europe (I was the only one in the uk) and all of my customers were based in continental Europe.  I gave up my uk office and worked from home.  With the uk being an hour behind everybody else I could still work their hours without getting up earlier.  I also found that I was spreading my working day over a longer period but taking bigger breaks (I could go out to the gym or the super market during the day but then work into the evening) .  My laptop was on and connected to email 24/7.  Not for everyone but it suited me.

With fuel and buying lunch I think that going into the office costs me £4 to £5 per day.

50 miles each way by car, public transport not practical (Into, across and back out of London THEN a 5 mile bus ride) - can take between 50 minutes (all motorway) , but normally1.5 to 2.5 hours each way depending on traffic conditions (on the M25 and M3). Has taken me >3hrs just to get home on occasions.

The 100 miles/3-5hrs a day drive takes its toll on me - by end of the week I am totally exhausted.

If I didn't enjoy what I'm currently doing I'd have quit ages ago.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

About 1h15 each way, in London, although it can be a fair bit more. I think that would be a fairly standard length of commute here.

Previous job was about the same as the OP. 60-90 min by car, 2hr or so by train, although if the planets aligned could be a bit quicker (or slower).

After a while, spending 3 hrs a day commuting does suck a lot of time out of your life. In my case, I have no choice, but if I could shorten it, I would.
MIght be able to shorten it with 2 wheels.  The last 4 offices I've worked at in London have all been quicker by bike.

If you are a bit too far for a pushbike, a motorbike would still most likely to be quicker than the trains.

For me, about 12 minutes by bike.  Would be close to double that if I used the Tube.

Depends when I leave... Usually it's about 25mins going there.. and if I leave at 5 it's about 40 mins getting home with traffic.. I usually leave at about 4.45 and it takes 25mins though..

It's about 1 hour 15 minutes commute door-to-door for me. That's just one way mind.
Same for me - but only once a week. I don't think I could do it every day. My *main* everyday job is 20 seconds, from the house to the workshop... and that's there *and* back ;).

My second job is 20 minutes each way, or can be up to twice that if I have to go in on a Friday. I hate Fridays...
I did it every day for about 7 years, then as soon as acquisitions happened, I started working from home more. I work from home maybe 4 days a week at this point. So it's not too bad.

    Bye!

Approx. 35 miles each way, mostly motorway so typically it's 50 mins in the morning & 1hr in the evening. There's always the odd day here and there where there's an accident and things take significantly longer, but luckily the M40 isn't bad for that.

  • 10 miles by bike each way. So 20miles a day.
Each trip takes 30-45 mind depending on the headwinds.
    My PB is 23mins.
The commute is the best part of my day! I enjoy the ride- it's all on cycle lanes & canal tow paths.

I'm about to switch to a new job- 5miles but through the city so not as nice a cycle.

My office is an hour from home, however I’m working up north until September so my drive up on a Monday night is about 4 hours, drive home on a Friday is anything from 5 - 7 hours. Bloody M6/M5.
This week's procrastination forum might be moved to sometime next week.

This post came up just in time for me to complain about my commute. It should be 5 minutes by car, 45 minutes by train and then 10 minutes on the tube, but always takes much longer.

The train is the worst, it is delayed by 15 minutes at least 4 times a week, and by 30 minutes at least once a week. On special occasions they just cancel all of the trains because of some signalling fault and I have to drive or take a couple of busses for 30 minutes to the nearest tube station and take that train.

And starting from today there is 5 days of industrial action.
