Anyone got any thoughts on what they would like the next challenge to be?

I'm thinking it should probably be something rock based.......

I'd prefer something with more freedom. Come up with a chord sequence and let us run wild with that.

How about a " Classic Riff" style, ( rock or otherwise) so the piece should contain a riff of such magnitude it will be remembered for all time !

Also maybe listing the gear used for each challenge, just for nerds?

Ah yes....maybe we get a number of chords to use and nothing more ...nice.

  • Perhaps a scale suggestion - a short piece based entirely around a particular mode.

I know nothing of modes, so being told one and the intervals, would be a neat challenge for me.

    Otherwise, how about a technique?

A challenge based around, for example, tapping, chugging, chicken pickin' (count me out! :P ).

Or, as suggested, a chord sequence - complete with what notes are actually in those chords. Then let us play with that.

I'm guessing a chord sequence would make listening through to all the entries pretty repetitive when it comes to voting time.

The scale/mode idea is good, though.

Yeah...but just a number of chords to use in any sequence you choose?

    Not so repetitive?

  • I was kinda thinking of doing the 'Classic Riff' idea, as in people just need to record the riff and it doesn't even have to be in a song. I was thinking this might be fairly easy and quick for people to do...............

Might be a good idea to get more folks involved for sure :)

Just pick a genre that's fairly accessible. Or maybe choose a time signature.

Do what you can with Chords x, y & z, including the notes therein ...
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

    I want more drone-based challenges!

I've really enjoyed making random skronks from guitar/softsynths then stretching/filtering and generally mangling the results out of all recognition.

I doubt I'll submit my piece as nobody other than me would listen to it but the whole idea of immersing oneself into an unusual musical situation has been very interesting and refreshing. It's funny but trying to make an avant-garde, unstructured  noise has been a lot harder than I thought it would be. You get just as obsessive over a swoosh or fart noise as you do over the perfect blackface spoiled clean neck pickup tone or whatever your particular grail sound happens to be.

I suppose I'm trying to say that there is merit in going outside the usual "produce a blues riff in A" sort of thing. I prefer the less prescriptive tasks like "dog music" or "theme from an imaginary sitcom" to something dictating exactly what chords I have to use.

...of course, you could say that trying something you might not ordinarily do is the essence of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and therefore having to impersonate Joe fucking Bonamassa might be deeply improving in some way.

I demand you submit that entry immediately!

That sounds like just my cup of tea - I love a good skronk.

    :)
I never said it was a good skronk. Just some skronks!

They were then mashed up into something resembling musical Pâté. Actually this makes it sound more appealing than it is. Musical slurry perhaps?  Sort of like the audio equivalent of that mechanically recovered intestinal mucous that they make burgers out of.

Have just listened to it and it's not even as interesting as that. You'll just have to trust me on this one :)

  • @Basher please submit your sexy porno groove Skronk Drone music!

I think the thing is that some people like ordered challenges and some like open ones, and given we are doing and open one at the moment it is probably time to give a bit of order to proceedings :-)

Don't worry though I have an idea for a realy awesome challenge after this one.
