    Ahh. Now I see.

I really like your stuff. Reminds me a bit of David Torn in his Splattercell guise, only a bit more chaotic and industrial. I mean this in a good way!

My piece is nothing like that. Nowhere near as interesting. It just goes nnnnnnnnnnnnn with a few skrrp skrrrrrooop noises coming in and out.

  • About 6 for the Drone competition but hopefully a few more people will enter before the deadline.

Just to say I am just editing a video I amd going to upload showcasing the prize (diago little smasher) and I have to say it is awesome.

If it gets more people to brave submitting an entry, I'd go for the classic riff idea.

I'd like us to be able to put together a CD (!!) of the top 3 entries from each challenge later in the year.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

OK @Antique_Guitars - I'll submit it. But you were warned.

To be fair, it's not as skronky (or as good) as @steamabacus "Molecular Distortions" which I'm currently listening to.

I just need to sort out some kind of picture. I'd love to make a terribly bleak movie to go along with it but I'm not really that well up on that sort of thing.

i prefer a style or feel based brief. Writing to specific chords and notes etc is a pretty soul-less way to produce music in my opinion.

I will also be finishing my submission imminently

I vote for the classic riff idea. You'll get more entries - anyone can write and record a riff -and it'll be easier to judge, as the riff could be a maximum of 4 bars long.

Unfortunately I've got no time to record an entry for the drone competition before tomorrow's deadline, but a riff competition would be more doable for those of us who don't get much time to play and record.

I'd generally be happy with any challenge to be honest, will always enter if I have time to record anything. Not sure what regulations may affect this, but I quite like doing cover versions, so the challenge could be arranging something in your own way on a particular theme or similar.
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

I tend to do better when there's scope to bend the rules. Ideas could include
    • A track in the style of a band or a band of your choice
    • A track in which the solo is made up of three notes although you can bend notes
    • Everyone could be given some royalty free loops to use to see what they can come up with
    • Write a riff using a certain scale and key
    The list is endless...

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

I vote for a 17 minute prog epic, complete with hammonds, mellotrons, big chords, 70s synths, flutes!.

The fact that I may, or may not, have something all ready to send is neither here nor there!

  • Only 17 minutes! Frankly good Sir that is insulting to prog! Has to be over 40mins minimum

Well, it's the first part of a triple album suite. All one song based on the life of John Keats. Comes in a gatefold cover with artwork by Jon Anderson.  Natch.

How about a track, any style you want but can only consist of two chords.
Inversions are allowed.  You have to create a melodic theme and solo BUT the solo can only use notes in a two-octave range, rather like the default keying on a saxophone. This will have to make you think about your choice of notes for the solo as well as the theme.

I like chord sequence idea. But do it ias I IV etc so we can pick the key minor or major.

This is a bit a tongue in cheek and could get very silly but what about guitar instrumentals done as 'one tune in the style of another'?

e.g. a thrash version of Amazing Grace?
A reggaed up version of Freebird?
A Smiths tune given the Shadows/ Hank Marvin treatment?
A Jake Bugg track played a la skiffle? Oh hang on...

Defo a good idea and something we shall probably do in the future.

  • 'In the style of' (insert player here who *has* quite a distinctive style).

Genre - funk, rock, metal, groove etc

I'd definitely like to hear a funk one.
