The Fretboard Guitarist Collective

What's Hot
The Fretboard Guitarist Collective is an opportunity for you to participate is a monthly musical task that involves dusting off your favourite guitar and recording something on your PC or Mac which you can then share with the forum. The aim is to have fun, give your guitar practice and production skills a focus and most importantly have some fun.

This is open to everyone from a beginner to the seasoned pro and the middle-aged duffer like me. It’s not a competition – there are no prizes. The only rule is to be constructive when commenting on someone’s playing – leave the nasty comments to Simon Cowell and his ilk.

If you’re new to this sort of thing feel free to ask for help on setting up a small recording studio on a shoestring, though to production techniques, playing tips, theory and beyond. And don’t be shy ..

I’ll set the first task after which we will seek volunteers. Remember the aim is to have fun .. Suggestions always welcome and contributions are actively sought.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Nice idea.  And exactly the right timing for me for a bunch of other reasons.

I am happy to help, schedule permitting.
I'm probably best with sound design and mixing methodology.

I might do something in Logic or Protools showing people how to set up sidechain compression properly for mixing drums.
    Anyone interested in this?

Do you mean posting jam tracks then posting our takes? (quick and loads of fun) or complete compositions? (not so quick but even more fun). As long as we're all "gentle with each other" it'll be brilliant. I'm in.

Good idea - I miss the old collective site.

  • Excellent to see this on the forum.  I don't imagine I'll have enough time to participate, but maybe it will give me a focus to get the guitar out in the evenings.  I need something to stop me being so lazy in the evenings.

  • Good idea, and I like how you've executed the first instalment with that backing track. Is that home made?

The backing track was made by pro musicians and is copyright free - the original site they were on has long since vanished by I have a few of the tracks.

I might create a separate backing tracks section to let people jam over some professional [not midi] copyright free blues and rock tracks. Is this a good idea?

Im prob better at making backing tracks than solo'ing so I'm happy to churn out some heavier backers.

I've got a backing track we could use.

    Happy to do one.

Great - I was thinking we could have a 'backing track' of the month thread as well as the Collective task which could remain more challenging.

I just did mine entirely on the iPad.  JamUp Pro with the in-built recorder.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Was thinking about suggesting this as a "collective" track.

I'm glad you do. My old band didn't want to do it which is why it's now just a jam track :D
