It's hilarious how many times I've heard 'good' guitarists - at least one of who I know for certain is dismissive of Edge as a player - try to play U2 songs, and fail laughably badly.

OK, I'll concede that calling him the shittest guitarist ever was a sweeping statement and of course who is to say what makes a great guitar player.  Let's just say I don't like his style of playing as I'm not a massive effects guy.  I also realised afterwards that I'm also a big Slash fan which is really no different to being called Edge..........:-/

Thing I can never understand is one guy takes a guitar, puts a lot of effects like distortion and wah and that's ok but another guy takes a guitar and use's an echo effect and he's now seen as someone who is nothing without his effects ! 

The Edge is a shit hot player anyway, what he does might look simple but to get it sounding as tight and clean as he does isn't easy.

Just because someone usually plays simple guitar parts doesn't mean that's all they can play. After all didn't Oscar Wilde say that "A gentleman is someone who can shred, but doesn't"

There are clips of him alternating between playing guitar and keys while singing awesome backing vocals on New Years Day. Anyone who can do that is no mug.

yeah the effects thing is always IMO a mental accusation to level at a player as a way of dissing them. This is what happens when art is hijjacked by the guys down the pub. We end up with this preconceived notion of what acceptable norms are, if you deviate from them more than once per album it's a gimmick.

It must be better for a couple of music people to invest in Fender than an asset stripping hedge fund or shyster banks.I dont really know much about U2 .I do know if you call someone the Edge  he probably isnt .I couldnt even name a single song of theirs .Probably my loss ,who knows.
