Fitted a set of Junkyard Dog & Blitz Sprit(with A4 mag) in a LP style guitar for Rob who is the foreman at Hiscox cases and kindly trusts me to work on his guitars and was deeply impressed by them - so much so that I have ordered up the same set to try in my personal Feline Lion 20th anniversary.

Looking forward to testing them out!

  • COR.  That's pornography.

Why would you get a CS LP when you could get something like that?!

    Oil City pickups are fab.

Going in Jonathan's personal Lion is high praise indeed!

    @FelineGuitars .... wow.

@TheGuitarWeasel ... what news on the minHBs that are "coming soon" ??  What sort of sounds are you going to be aiming at with them?

Well my Firebird pickups have been here for a while .... admittedly in short supply .... but my minis will be initially a vintage set, trying to keep with the sparkle and openness of the proper originals. I will then add a slightly more growly set if the market is there :)

Ooh mini hums? Will you be doing them in a firebird mount (ie threaded holes in the legs) so I can hang one from a Tele scratchplate?

That's the general plan. Another of my customers has pointed out the woeful lack of choice in the mini bucker market, and I intend to have a couple of flavours available.

Got them in my Lion and the results are pretty darn good
As ever takes a bit of tweaking and calibrating and getting used to a new sound.
Really like what I heard though.

The wax potting Ash does stood up to my rig - impressed with that as many new boutique pickups seem to squeal!

Scrapyard Dog is superb - just what the doctor ordered
This Lion with it’s ebony board is a bit bright and the A5 and hot wind seem to stop it being too shrill
It sounds kind of tough sounding which is nice and gives a great crunch tone.
I was thinking I would like it a little more open but maybe a bit of amp tweaking is all I need.

The Blitz spirit version that I tried in the neck is really nice but it is apparently more like a bridge version with an A4 magnet - same as a set I tried in someone else's guitar and liked.
I think I might be interested in trying something just a touch softer and more open.
So maybe a completely stock Blitz with the A2 magnet (or even the A4 version without being the bridge version) would be a good place to start comparing for me - think that would get me closer to an ideal set for this guitar.

    Full marks for first impressions!
My poor neighbours had to put up with a lot of Scorpions Dokken and UFO songs being murdered tonight :P

I thought I'd post this here rather than PM Ash so everyone can benefit from the reply.

I notice that on the site you mention that you have some alternative P90 designs on the drawing board. Are you able to reveal what they might be and/or when they are available?

I ask because I'm very likely to acquire a guitar with P90's in the not to distant and thus I'll probably consider some of Oil Cities finest. The guitar in question currently has a Dimarzio Super Distortion P90. I know you like P90s and Super Distortions so I'd be interested to know your opinion on the combination of the two. I'm a bit wary of things like single sized sized HBs, but I do love mini hums so the jury is out.

Well so far I've been making tapped FireWatch pickups to special order ... and now (I hope)they will become a standardised stock line :)
The Oil City  'MuttLug' (vintage dog ear) will be an off the shelf item.
I will be doing a high output 'Sabbath' style soapbar and dogear ... a plan is afoot to make my Sun-T-Rons available in a P90 form factor (DeArmond Dynasonic type beasties) and to put mini humbucker in P90 cases :)

  • Well looking forward to trying that sun-t-ron ash, though mine will be the standard humbucker sized case.

Might need a guitar with a Sabbath p90 in, too. I wish I didn't enjoy this making and modding lark...

Oh .... I'm going to be having a new year clear out of my odds sods and spares boxes ... so anyone with a bit of a fixer upper to do might find some handy stuff.
I'll bung a list in the classy-fried section at some point. :)

Going to be shifting along a couple of demo guitars too soon ... need to be more focused on need rather than want guitars.
