Just back from his 02 gig. Blimey the bloke can play. His new-ish material is a bit sterile sounding and mawkish MOR rock oriented, I wish he'd played more rawk.

Forgot he was doing O2 dates and that I couldn't get tickets. Now I'm depressed :(

When I saw him at Wembley back in October it was the best I've seen him in the half a dozen or more times I've watched him live. Just a great command of his music.

His newer "americana" albums have really grown on me since seeing him perform the stuff live but Continuum will be hard to top.

Rumours that there's another JM3 album on the way.

Well he did say he's going to start on a new album as soon as this tour is finished. No idea what style though.

This is the first time I've seen him live and didn't quite know what to expect, but I thought he might do some of his more rocky tracks ....it was probably two thirds acoustic numbers.

He seems a bit marmite among guitarists, I know, I suppose there's a degree of suspicion about the pretty boy looks and his mainstream appeal, tempered with the fact that he's obviously a very gifted player.

I wish I had his other guitarist's collection btw, he had a seemingly endless selection of guitar porn. The bastard.

Continuum/ Battle Studies and the JM3 stuff are great, IMO.
Born and Raised had some great moments, and some dross. His latest one bores me senseless :(

He did a song with the trio live on a US TV show a couple of months back, and I think the host said they were working on a new (trio) album..? If so, "first day buyer" here, as the kids say on the interweb these days.

Bloke can play from what I've heard, but the singing puts me off...

The voice is part of the appeal for me.

The guy can really play, he's an amazing player and has a fantastic voice as well. With the pretty boy looks and the good songs the guys got the whole package really.

On one of the DVD's he talks about sitting in the cellar all day every day just honing his playing and getting better and better. I think he deserves to be where he is.

Amazing player, I like his newer albums with a bit of a country vibe to them, it`s the face pulling that kills me but saying that "Where the Light Is" is an amazing DVD/CD with some great blues Out of My Mind is truly excellent.

Having just watched that again, he is feckin quality.

His Crossroads Festival 2007 version of Gravity will always be hard to top IMO, especially the outro solo from 4:25

Continuum is brilliant, but I find the rest of his stuff a bit meh.

The trio is another thing altogether though! Fantastic, authentic blues. He needs to release a live album every year of that stuff!

I like and admire him as a package i.e. good songwriter, vocalist and guitarist and I saw him last year at The O2 and he was great.
Continuum gets another +1 from me as does "Where the light is" - superb! I've liked a couple of tracks like "Shadow Days" and "Paper Doll" from the new albums, but not much else. I also think anyone who can play "Neon" and sing so well over the top of it has made a pact with the devil!
I find his acoustic songs very moving e.g. Stop this train and Daughters

Actually I need to backtrack on my Meh comment - His 'Where the light is' double live CD is really good throughout.

Apart from horribly (in)sincere speech that completely ruins Bold As Love.

I have to say I find his playing insincere.

He's clearly very capable but I've never heard him play something which passes the 'hairs on the back of the neck' test.

Couldn't agree more.  Although he can play, he does nothing for me. I have to wince at the "look-at-what-I'm-doing" attitude he projects, especially when he plays small, insignificant licks, which in my opinion are pretty soulless.

I'm aware of who he is but I've never heard a song of his all the way through and I've never heard him played on daytime radio (though I remember hearing an ad for one of his LP's on Talksport of all places (which was only marginally more interesting than hearing "Get it straight from Selco" for the 10,000th time).

Has he got much of a following in this country?

I tried watching him do a guitar clinic on YouTube but after five minutes I just thought what a cock and turned off. He is clearly very talented but the emphasis on moody down tempo songs make him a bit hard going for me.
Although every time he gets mentioned on here I have Gravity stuck in my head for hours after.

I have to disagree with a few here, I think his playing, songwriting and singing are generally great. Yes he's been through the ego trip and fortunately come out the other side it would seem from recent interviews. Sure he's still a little full of himself but then he is super talented, rich, famous and American :-) "Where the Light Is" is one of my favourite all time records, and was one of those personal discoveries I just happened across several years back.

Finally I watched the clinic he gave to Berklee college on Youtube and he gave some very sage advice and comments...and some great playing. Definitely worth a watch.

I watched a couple of the Youtube clips, and surprisingly they're pretty good.  What he had to say was quite interesting.

I still don't like his music though.

Coincidentally, I watched this earlier today:

I think he's a great player, superb singer, and excellent songwriter.
