Cheapish Analog Delay?

What's Hot

I'm after a cheapish analog delay with dual outputs, a reasonable length delay (600ms?) and a small footprint. I have been using my DD7 but it sounds a touch digital. If the Carbon Copy had dual outputs i'd be all over it, but what else is out there?

If you have another pedal with dual outputs, you run a Carbon Copy 'wet' on one of them.

    Boss DD-3.

Yes, I know it's digital :). Although *only* the delay line is, the rest is all analogue.

(Assuming by dual output you mean the ability to split the wet and dry, and not ping-pong or anything fancy.)

Yep, my DD7 ping pongs and i'm not a fan. I thought it was only the DD2's and early DD3's (long chip) that were analog?

I was really after an all analog option though.

No, it was only the chip that was changed (twice, there is a third type from 2001 onwards) - the actual circuit is still the same, with an analogue feedback loop and mix section. It's also 12-bit, so it doesn't sound as 'clinical' as most other digitals.

It's not easy to find an analogue with both dual outs and 600mS delay time *and* in a small format though…

Is 450mS enough? - Maxon AD-9 Pro. Or is the AD-999 small enough?

The AD999 is ace, I used to have one - it's a little big and pricey though. I'll have to investigate the AD9 Pro though.

The new(ish) Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail has a wet-insert TRS loop which can be used as a wet-only output.  Adjustable modulation, does up to 600ms, and has a pulsing blue knob too, if that kind of thing floats your boat.  Was all set to get one but got a good deal on a used CB Echorec which I couldn't resist.

I'd not heard of this one but it looks good, and is named after a Ride song. Might be one for the birthday list.

I was really after an all analog option though.

Basically there are two types of digital delays, the kind that are basically an analog delay with a digital chip where the bucket brigade would be (dd2, dd3, deep blue delay, Ibanez DE7) and the kind that are just DSP all the way (dd5 onwards, Dl4 and so on)

The DD2/3 are the first, they changed the type of chip but thats it, they sound really good. Theres a lot of hype about the early chip but personally I didnt feel it was all that.

The ibanez DE7 might be worth a try as it sounds more filtered and analog-ey and has wet dry outs.

Have you tried it in a non-ping pong mode?

Keep an eye out for the discontinued Malekko 600. It's BBD and I think it ticks all your boxes.

They run anywhere between £100 to £300.

Made from frozen unicorn tears etc etc

    Mine's not for sale ;-)

I saw that, and would be interested if I had the money - but sadly I don't at the moment.

After looking into this a bit more i've come to the conclusion that the Maxon AD9 Pro covers all that I need. Does anyone have experience of this pedal? I loved the AD999 I had, bar the delay time, how do they compare?
