Imitation...Flattery...Jooky! My attempt at Paisleyfying/Jookyfying a Jazz bass.

What's Hot
Afternoon all.

After reading the insightful article on how Mr Jooky himself goes about applying fabric to a guitar, I thought i'd give it a whack. Its actually the article that led me to this site, and if you haven't given it a read yet, i'd recommend it! So, at the request of the man himself, here's a glimse.

The idea is simple. One that many guitarists have had. I WANT A F*%&ING PAISLEY TELECASTER. Sorry....got carried away there. Anywho, the money escapes me (But thats nothing new), so I saw the guide and thought crikey, someones gone and bloody done it! I had seen previous Jooks with the paisley finish, trawling through the archives, thought they looked smashing and threw caution to the wind.

So, it started life as my brothers old Squier Standard Jazz bass. I was in need of one and he was looking to shift it. Everyone's A Winner, especially if you're Hot Chocolate.

image

From there, it's had a good old sanding and the back has been sprayed black to match the main theme, and the top was left white, to help the pattern stand out, as per instruction! (And yes, that is a makeshift spray booth made from nothing but an old built in wardrobe, a broom and some washing line...McGuyver...)

Then came the squeaky bum moment. Getting the damn fabric on.

I'd gone for a subtle, tasteful, understaded blend of paisley and pink.

image

Generously cut to make sure I didn't screw the edges up, as paranoia was now high.

image

Ready for your close up?

image

And now I'm here, waiting for the first coat to dry.

image

Which, incidentally, is taking a long time. I think it may be because I started the coat before the one sticking the fabric to the wood had fully dried, but hey ho, live and learn.

I'm using the matte mod podge, as well as a bottle of the glitter mod podge (Eventually). The idea is to do a few base coats of the matte, then a few of the glitter, then alternate once or twice more then slap a halfords tinnie of matte laquer over the top. Though i've been told by a model train enthusiast (Working in a record/guitar shop brings in all sorts...especially in the the Medway towns) that the Testors matte spray is the dogs unmentionables, so I might give that a whack.

Lonnnnnng post, apologies!

Anywho, whatcha thing you lot?

Hopefully this will do your guide justice Jooky, I'm not sure i've seen anyone else giving it a go yet....

Excellent stuff :) No, I don't think anyone else has had a go yet either... can't wait to see it finished. The glitter mod podge is pretty cool, kinda holographic rather than glitter ballish.

    Nice :)

  • Ah-thank you sir.

I went for the standard glitter. They had an extreme glitter one, as i'm sure you've seen, but didn't want it to end up looking like a Lady Gaga fans orgasm, so played it safe.

  • Late night update:

Leaving it to dry overnight for the first one I think, just to be sure. We'll see what the morning brings!

Here's where we've got to in one coat of matte! There's a Jazz under there somewhere!

    NIce bit o cloth, there!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

  • Welp, I don't know what I was expecting the glitter to look like wet, but it wasn't that! Ha!

    Lets see how it dries...

  • You can kind see the glitter. Its definitely an in-person kinda thing, and it is a bit more holo than glitter ball.

  • Eeeeek! Just cut the excess off and....its a JAZZ BASS!

    image
    image

The edges are a bit rough, and the glue did seep out of the sides a little so that'll need sanding back down along with the edges so I can get a smoother finish as the body goes around.

Then its onto bursting the body to cover up the dodgy bits ;) And spraying on some laquer!

    So...whatcha think?!

Next up is the hardware upgrade. New bridge, new machine heads, electronics re-wire (Throwing a blend pot in) and some new pick-ups (Still undecided).

Oh....and I think it needs a maple neck, don't you?
