Pat Travers on the OGWT.. that's what I'm looking for. I've got all the DVDs that the Beeb produced from the series, but still cannot find his performance. He played Makin' Magic and it was a life changing moment for me  :D

Some great tracks there .. Focus saved the OGWT from being cancelled. The Specials were a great live band and the Tom Petty clip was awesome as well. The OGWT was far better than Jools .. for a start there was a wider range of music.

New Year hasn't been the same since the OGWT finished! Sorry, but Jools Facking Holland just doesn't do it for me... there always seems to be too much filler (or am I just suddenly OLD?!).

The Whistle Test was part of the soundtrack to many a drunken New Year's Eve. I really miss seeing that clip of Lynyrd Skynyrd doing Freebiird at whatever festival, where the bassist's lead is too short! And SAHB's 'Next!'.
My biggest disappointment was the realisation that the performances weren't all live. At least Jools Holland has that.

OGWT was broadcast in the years when I was just getting into music and it was the one program that I used to look forward to more than any other. The trouble with Jools is that it's like falling for the same joke again and again - I look forward to it, but then end up fast forwarding through most of it. Maybe I'm getting old too but I have to agree with Dogload about the amount of filler. However, even though I moan about it we need a programme like this where just about every artist is original rather than the mass-produced pop that Cowell and his cronies want to inflict upon us. As much as they claim to be trying to finding the next big thing these programmes will never find the new Beatles, Dylan, Springsteen, etc. (Rant over)

Thought it was just me being an old fart ! ;)

Later has introduced me to plenty though - Hot Club of Cowtown, KT Tunstall, Janelle Monae ... But I'd agree there's too much cronyism

To be fair OGWT was the only programme on UK TV, it was run on a shoestring and pumped out at god-o'clock at night (Fridays after the pub !) - it certainly helped it's cult and niche status. Though I do recall endless Loggins & Messina sessions ;)

Always makes me laugh when people immediately associate TOGWT with Bob Harris.
Fer Gawd's sake, it was Richard Williams who first presented it!

There we go, old age showing again.

Not at all, and Whispering Bob was the worst for "Mmmm nice" and for favouring long chats with west coast trendy bands.

    Annie Nightingale
The Live Aid crew (OGWT's finest hour IMNSHO)  David Hepworth, Mark Ellen, Richard Skinner and Andy Kershaw

  • I cannot stand Bob Harris.

Sorry, I'm sure he is a good man with a good heart but listening to him makes me want to stab my radio.

Another old fart test and I genuinely can't remember the correct order or indeed all 5 of the names.

Which five presenters held the 10-midnight slot on Radio 1 in the early seventies and on which nights of the week?
(yes we can all remember it was Peel on Friday, Friday Night is Booogiee Night)
