@hotpickups...seeing as many of us probably haven't actually played a LazyJ, we are not best placed to give specific nominations other than amps we have played (or not) or that we wouldn't mind ourselves! As such, is this relevant help to you??

So, to follow the herd (but being a Tweed Deluxe owner/player and ex Bassman 59 LTD owner too, thereby knowing all about 'the vibe' and tonal requirements), I throw in a nod for that Yerasov GTA15... I do so on the basis that I know how such an amp can double up with a Tweed Deluxe to give a nice full complimentary sound - in my case though comes from my Pignose G40V (although the Pignose is a full 40w of 6L6 power ala 59 Bassman!)

I'm still over the moon with the Swart AST I bought about six months ago. Kind of a Tweed Deluxe with Blackface-style tremolo and sumptuous 'verb.

I must say, I wonder if it's worth spending £2.5k on something your audience won't notice that much. If you get something complimentary like chrisv and others suggest, then you would be able to create some different textures, and have more options for recording.

I also feel obliged whenever this come up to mention these little gems... http://www.tube-tone-engineering.co.uk/Redneck_20.html . Kind of Lazy J on a budget. This guy compares them... http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewtopic.php?f=27&p=1027339. He doesn't rate the power reduction, though I think it's very useful.

    Anyway, happy shopping!

The lazy J's really have something that no other amp has it seems. God knows what it is but I'm sure it's not 2.5k of amp for a J20 at least. Time to save up ..... Again :(

Great recommendation there @svejk. Never hear of Tube Tone Engineering before both their prices seem very good.

  • I used to have a Victoria 20112 Deluxe to go with my J20H - lower power but still got fair volume, more drive at the same volume - good match. I now use one of the new silverface Deluxe Reverbs - took a while to break it in (I guess the speaker) but it's an absolute killer now - they don't seem to get a lot of attention - not sure why.

    Similar route I think I'll be taking but in reverse. A J20 standard and a J20H :)

I guess I'm not looking at equivalents now and going with what I do know by first hand experience. I just love my J20 :)

An extra zero on the end of the price? :D

Just kidding, I've never tried them and I'm sure they're great. :D

I've never tried them (and the prices look very tempting, I've half-considered one before but I have no more room... or money :)) ), but I have to make the point (that applies to other manufacturers with similar names) that I really hate when companies come up with a really generic brandname, especially if it includes the name of one of the component parts (like "tube" or "tone" or whatever). It makes it virtually impossible to google effectively for information about or reviews of the products (or even on Ebay etc.) without getting millions of irrelevant hits. :))

@dave_mc It's a similar fate to XXX Horny Amps. Great amps, but they never make it very high up the search engine results.

Vintage Guitars is probably the worst (real) brand for this...

Yeah, that's exactly the type of thing I mean, and they're one of the worst. They're definitely a pain to search for- even mentioning them in threads on forums, every time you mention them you have to say something like, "Vintage (brand, not age) guitars..." to clarify you mean the JHS brand and not just old guitars...

Like others have mentioned it's worth checking out some Swart offerings. They seem to go for better used prices than in previous years (in the buyers favour that is!).

I've got a Tone King Falcon which is a great little amp for tweed/supro style tones. It does have a blackface setting for slightly higher headroom but I doubt it be loud enough to compete with the j20.

Rift Amps may also be worth a contact to find it what deal they can do. Never had any personal experience of them myself but look fairly solid and based here the UK. Some lines still seem to command a fairly hefty price though.

I just read about these amps. Sounds like a great contender for a budget LazyJ. I will certainly get in contact with him when nearer to buying another amp to run alongside my J20. Thanks @svejk

  • Clark Beaufort - have to import though. Look them up on u tube, they kind of got squeezed out by the great Victoria 'must have' amp rush of yesteryear.

LOL. Not at those prices. I'd rather go to Jesse of Lazy J and keep it local

Not at their prices either. May as well stick to a Lazy J. Lazy J has more features too compared to Gartone prices :)
